Itchy Boots

Today's episode features the ugliest face she is capable of making! Quite entertaining!

Did she ever mention how she's supported? I don't see any sponsors, ads, promos, etc.

From the FAQ on her web page:
How do you fund your travels?
I sold my house and my possessions so I could go and travel. I wanted to keep myself on the road for as long as possible. Now I earn some money with my YouTube channel, selling stickers and this blog. Sometimes people donate me money for petrol, and some brands have donated me gear or equipment but none of them is paying me.

Swedish fermented herring... yum! The taste didn’t seem to bother her. The smell on the other hand...

She should try some lutefisk. A real favorite in my home state of Minnesota! I’m half Swede (“Sjodin”) but wouldn’t touch it though. o_O

Ms Schoenmaker gets a stipend from YouTube as mentioned. IINM it’s based on number of views, even over time. I think she once mentioned she still gets a bit for recent views of her earliest Vlog episodes. Also, I suspect her ‘rates’ have increased since she reached half a million subscribers. I remember seeing her getting her 100,000 subscribers award plaque from YouTube. There must be one for 500K!

Correct if I’m wrong but I think she gets a bit more if you actually watch some of the mini commercials. I do, plus I sent her some gas money (see her website).

She gets a little something from YT if you just click or watch the advertisements in her vids. I don't know if she gets more if you watch the whole ad but they're short.

Geeze it wasn't that long ago when she had only ("only") 480K subscribers. After sticking a knife in that can I would have deep-sixed it packed up and headed for a McDonalds. There are some lines I will not cross when imbuing local culture.

That closing drone shot was fantastic. She could make a terrific landscape still from that and hang it on her wall. If she had a wall. Or a house with a wall to hang it on.

Or make a digital file or "analog" print and sell them to us! It was gorgeous.

I like pickled herring with a little bit of sour cream on a crusty bun, Cherie on the hand won’t even prepare it for me so I am left on my own when I have it. It is delicious and I agree that the smell isn’t the best part.

As I understand it YT pays the creator after 30 seconds watch time, if you click skip before that no money made by the video creator. If I like a video creator I watch the commercials in their videos. I remember reading that a creator will make 2 or 3 cents a view, the advertiser will pay 20 cents and more, YT keeps a least half and then you average the skipped commercials with the viewed ones you end up with that figure. A lot YouTube creators probably make a lot less per view, if your audience is made up of impatient kids for example I doubt that as many would view commercials as adults. The advertising buyers also direct their money to popular creators so that makes each slot more valuable for them than some less popular creators. Some YouTube creators are blatant about telling you that it helps for you to watch the commercials while others don’t mention it.

I detest advertising, as a general thing. BUT, I want to support Noraly. What to do?

After I watch a video and skip the ads, I'll mute the sound, go back a few episodes, turn on AutoPlay, start the episode, and minimize the browser window. It can play silently for as long as it likes provided that I neither see nor hear any advertising. When I've finished whatever else I'm doing I close the YT browser so as not to let it stray into other "suggested just for you" videos from creators I'm less interested in or outright dislike.

Hi Tip. I do love lefse, a favorite treat at holidays made by my beloved Aunt Theresa (RIP). As to fish, walleyed pike is the beST!, but I also favor kipper snacks (canned in cottonseed oil) on Kellogg’s Club Crackers, with a cold Leinenkugel. :p

I'd substitute annoying for blatant. Good info all though. Thanks for that. So it's the full commercial not so much because it's fun to stick it to the advertiser (and give Google more intel on you) but she gets more money. I've yet to send some petrol money but that's a good idea too. I especially like that her vids don't have her mentioning watching the commercials. As with this site I get a lot from her videos and that's worth something.

That's a good one. Her episodes are so much better outside of the cities and off the beaten path.

Wow I really like that vid! Yeah the off road stuff was fun but seeing more of her off-duty persona was more behind the scenes. Watching her do the mundane stuff of wiping everything down before packing up, kicking back at the laptop doing some editing... Stuff that makes us ride-alongs and part of the adventure instead of the more common 'presentation' equivalent to Uncle Ned's slide show of his trip to Sarasota (no offense Floridians) or a barbed-wire museum. And reminds me why motorcycle camping for me is finding a Best Western and roughing it is 5Gbps down WiFi.

Boss! De drone de drone! Love the Enya-esq vocalize while the drone is up. A very non-NSA feel. And the view of the lake while she was packing.

There hasn't been an episode I didn't like (and didn't Like) but this was one of the ones I really liked.

After our youngest daughter received her PhD from Stanford, the two daughters decided this was cause for a celebration and vacation (with Dad paying the bill) to Iceland. I read the link John has above and a lot of what she was saying hit home. We went in mid-August. It was cold. It was wet. And the wind was bad. I dressed for colder weather, but barely had enough clothes to keep warm in. And everywhere we went, we had to deal with the rain. I really enjoyed Iceland, but the time to go is back in July. Even in early August, I think the "tourist" season is over and done with.

Riding in rain is not a big deal...unless you're doing like she was and trying to camp. You dress for it, and you're comfortable in rain. But to do it all day, and not get to park in a garage and sleep in your bed at night, is tough. Do it day after day after day...and she has more stamina than I do.

Chris

Yes, I agree about riding in the rain. Once I have my duds on and am snug inside my helmet, it almost seems like sitting in your living room looking out the window at a rainy day. The problem comes when you have to get off the bike and start moving around in wet clothing or worse, set-up camp and try to cook something - and and yes, BY FAR the worst is packing up in the rain (and particularly on sandy soil as Noraly has done several times).

The sand and grit goes everywhere and it is almost impossible to get rid of it.
