Where did you ride today?

Nice weather and a short ride to collect some money in Toronto today, about an hour round trip. Not bad for the last days of November in Toronto at around 50F. I love to ride. And you don't have to worry about getting too hot!

It was my final ride of the season on my ST. I will keep the Vespa out a bit longer. Got a number of 7s on the odometer, played the “A-Z”game for Ontario. Stopped off in Clinton for lunch and headed home, filled the bike up with premium non ethanol fuel in prep for storage. Stayed toasty warm with heated gear.

My daughter and I did a loop up around the Carquinez Strait which is north of San Francisco/Oakland. It's crazy how empty much of the area is so close to these cities.

The lady on the '16 CB1100 at Port Costa seemed to think she had an older bike..

Had a big day out yesterday and rode as far north as it is possible to do in New Zealand, to the tip of Cape Reinga and around the Twin Coast Discovery route which takes in the Pacific and Tasman Sea coastlines of Northland. Lovely weather, even a touch warm later in the day, and beautiful scenery.

Last stop, Hokianga harbour mouth.

All up I covered 970km in just on 12 hours including the ferry, which was not bad going. The 1300 really is the perfect machine for this sort of gig. Feeling a bit weary today...

Uncle Phil - New Zealand 2014 Day 05
Its been many years since I last got to the top of NZ; in fact probably 1986 or so, when I rode there with mates at Easter, I was on my VF400F and the last 30km or so to the end was a metalled road. At the time this was an epic ride, much higher speeds and somehow took a lot longer as I recall getting home after 10pm. With the right machine, an early start and few significant stops this was a comparatively easy run, and all the more enjoyable for it.

That was me sitting on the back of the Z1000R. The guy riding is now a crew chief in WSBK, and the guy over the front wheel is my best mate who is about to buy himself a Z-H2 supercharged Kawasaki naked! The chap in the red jacket in the middle is an old school friend who I still keep in touch with, even though he now rides (?) a Spyder...Happy days indeed.

We're in the middle of summer and I'm on leave to next week, so I got a big day of riding in yesterday. With a near perfect/hot forecast, I departed at 0520 from my Auckland home and pointed south down the quickest route to Matamata, Tauranga, Whakatane and then stopped in Opotiki. First refuel of the day, then headed off around the East Cape following our local version of the Pacific Coast Highway (I've tried both, ours is better). Outstanding sea and bush views and a meandering road that is anything but dull with regular switchbacks and one-lane bridges to keep you on your toes and brakes.

A one-lane section heading down to cross the Motu River.

Heading for Waihau Bay, that is Cape Runaway in the far distance, the northern tip of the cape. If you're a film buff, the movie "Boy" by Taika Waititi was filmed in this area.

For you snow-bound types, you'll be pleased to know that as the temperature passed 26C I had to stop and switch to my mesh jacket at Tokomaru Bay. It later got up to 30C which was getting uncomfortably warm for me.

Further to the south and this is the surf coast just north of the city of Gisborne. I finished my coastal run there and headed inland through the Waioeka Gorge, which has enough twists and turns that you start to yearn for a sweeper or straight for a little rest. First world problems I guess...

The Waioeka Gorge had one more surprise for me as somehow I had just missed a decent downpour, the roads were wet and steaming but I remained bone dry.

After that I headed back toward Auckland with a nice scenic detour past the lakes towards Rotorua and then back home at 1920 on the boring roads.

All up I covered a little under 1200km and did that in right on 14 hours door-to-door. I was pretty tired after that, the heat was getting to me, and my wrists, knees and butt were feeling the full effects. The 1300 however was ready for more (after a new back tyre anyway...)

Another T31GT bites the dust...

First ride of 2021 today. 34 degrees, sunny, and calm wind. Enjoyed the scenery on a short but sweet hour long ride.
