Where did you ride today?

I took a "Sanity Ride" on Saturday. By the time I got moving, it was 2pm so I didn't have much time. It gets dark here at 5pm.

I headed north to Lake Cavanaugh, taking a back route through Granite Falls.

It was a nice road. Lots of twists and turns. The leaves were past their prime, but still colourfull.

While I love my ST for it's long-haul legs, short rides on slow roads seem like a waste of talent. Not so my Silver Wing scooter, I'm finding that this has opened up the simple pleasures of short/local rides to places that I used to visit when I was a noob back in the 1980's on my 125, 250 or 400cc bikes. Last weekend I headed off around Auckland's Scenic Drive, which winds around the bush-covered Waitakere ranges to the west of the city. I also took a detour that leads around the edge of the Manukau Harbour through Huia and on to Whatipu. Twisty roads, amazing fresh air and lovely scenery abound. We even managed a ford across a stream, and about 20km of gravel road as well.

The weather forecast yesterday showed 10 days of rain, with one bright spot...today. James (jtvisions) invited me to come along and get out of the house while we could enjoy it without liquid sunshine coming down on us.

So I put on two pairs of socks, long johns (top and bottom), my heated gear and riding gear and set out going north to meet up with James in Arlington.

I didn't show the route below, but this is the area we headed to.

It was foggy this morning, and fairly cold. The low I saw was 34F. We didn't see any grand vistas, but we saw some nice roads and farmland.

I have to admit that when I woke up this morning, I didn't want to go. But I also knew that if I could get myself out there, it would be a wonderful day.

And now, let the rain begin... :D

I see the "What did you do to your ST today?" thread is up to 365 pages. Maybe it's time we have an ongoing "Where did you ride today?" thread. It might be nice to hear where and how long other ride when you get a chance to ride.

You ride to work? You go for a short day ride? You just back from a long ride?

We may as well start a thread an tell each other how great any ride we had was when we ride.

I just did a short get out and about 20 mile ride. I rode down Pensacola's Scenic Highway which meanders down the western edge of Escambia bay Florida. Looped back through town and back to the house. The old ST1300 is running fine and the weather was blue skies and near 85 degrees. Great day for a ride.
It was cold and cloudy here in Boston today. I rode anyway out to newton to do some work. Even on a crummy day, its still nice to feel the vibration.
Ive been thinking about my recent trip and kind of wondering what i liked most about it. I saw some beautiful places, drank some wonderful beer, and chatted with some great people, but the best thing was hanging out with my ride and putting some miles on.

When i get too friggin old for the weight of the st, i want a silverwing. Not the scooter, but the bike. Always loved them!
As far as short jaunts on the st? I gotta do what i gotta do!

Rode to meet @Buckeye Rich at the former Competition Accessories in Springfield. We had a nice time looking at bikes and dreaming of future purchases! We also exchanged seats to see if we could both find the "goldilocks" version of our Russell Saddles. We were the only two to ride to the shop! It was high 30s/low 40s for our approximately 1 hour ride. The other customers looked at us like we were crazy for riding on the cold! A nice meet up for us both!

No where too exciting, just work and back, in the dark both ways!
I used to have to do that during a portion of the year. Hated it. I didn't mind riding to work in the dark – like it in fact. But riding home in the dark in rush hour traffic was way more fun than I liked to have. Everybody in a hurry regardless of the number of wheels under them. Dark in the morning and light in the evening. This is the way.

Had a big day of twisties today, about 500km round trip from my Auckland home, down the riders' favourite SH22 and on towards Kawhia harbour, then back past Waitomo Caves and back north again. Lovely spring weather, just a bit windy.
1605419634235.png
Even got in a little ADV riding in (shortcut between Pirongia and Raglan).

The ST is up on the Handy table lift being serviced, so I took my CRF250L out for the day.
I rode up to the top of Mount Lemmon, on the back service road.
Due to the recent fire (big horn fire) the entire backside of the mountain was burned badly, and there was burnt timber and cactus everywhere.
On top of that, the fire damaged caused flash floods, and the service road was a mixture of bowling ball sized rocks sticking up out of the ground, rock ledges, loose baby head sized rocks, sand, and ash.
It was a Red Bull Hard Enduro type ride yesterday.
When I got to the top (8000 ft alt.) I found snow on the ground, and got to play in that for a while.
It was just about dark as I headed back down and found a Honda CRF250 Rally model laying on its side at the edge of the road with a flat front tire.
I saw the owner walking down the trail and caught up to him and told him I could help and to come back to his bike.
I pulled out my tools, and my spare front tube out of my pelican box, and quickly replaced the damaged tube with mine, and got it put together just before the sun went down.
We rode down together, and parted ways when I headed back towards Tucson, and he headed north towards Globe.
All in all, it was a nice ride.

I got out of church today, and the rain hadn't started yet. In fact, it looked pretty good, even if it was cloudy. I checked my weather app, and it looked like I'd get caught in it at some point if I took a ride, but I decided to anyway.

I headed out to High Bridge Road. It's close by, goes through some farmland and woods. Has lots of twists and turns. And it is good enough to ride, that many people would go quite a ways to ride it...and it is in my back yard.

Last Friday.......a last minute decision & text message.

A Bandit 600, Kawasaki Z1000 and Pan European ST1100 heading off on the ferry at the North end of the island.
Colintraive to Inverary, then Lochgilphead....followed by a "not so great" decision to head North up to Oban.
Heading North took us into a band of very heavy / torrential winter rain that was sweeping across Scotland.
A very tight & twisty road with appalling visibility kept the speeds well down and it took about an hour to do 36 miles.
A hot coffee in Oban, then back on the bikes (with continuing heavy rain) and headed via Connell and along Loch Awe through flooded roads and rivers of water flowing across the road.
Loch Awe still looked magnificent through the rain.
Turned off just before Dalmally and over the hill back to Inverary.
I suffered a severe cramp in my left leg and rode the whole way relatively slowly over the hill (about 12 miles) with my leg hanging out to the side, just able to bend it very briefly for gear changes as needed.
Managed to pull over at Inverary and exercise the leg and settle the muscle, then headed back to the ferry.
Still pouring with rain.
Made it back just in time for the ferry after a very wet high speed blast.
200 odd miles in mainly heavy and cold rain.
Thank goodness for heated grips and modern (waterproof) bike jackets, as well as the weather protection of the Pans fairing & deflectors.

Mind you....we all still enjoyed it...so we're heading out again on Thursday.
I'll try and get some photos this time (I'll take my waterproof camera :)).

Thursday...only dry day in the forecast, 3 of us set off from the North end of the island on a cold / dry morning.
Lots of wet roads and water running off the hills, so not exactly a dry run.

First a petrol stop for me.
IMGP1336.JPG
Tony on the Bandit 600 wanted to do some "glamour shots" of his bike, so we headed for the top of the "Rest and be thankful".
The road is still under repair / modification after the landslides a few months ago and they are using a convoy system utilising the "Old military road" that snakes down from the top of the pass and into the glen below. So to avoid the queues before the junction at the top, we went along the single track road to Lochgoilhead and before we got there, diverted onto the other singe track back up onto the hill and up to the top of the "Rest".
I do not like either of those roads, single track, very tight, very twisty, covered in gravel, water and occasional sheen of diesel.
At the point where we turned about 160 degrees to the left, there was gravel and muck and I ended up with my front wheel off the edge of the tarmac and sunk in mud & water (did I mention that I do not like these roads ). I was stopped, left foot in mud, water , grass etc, right foot on the tarmac / gravel, holding the bike upright. The cavalry arrived (they were just behind me) and after sarcastically mentioning that I was "just drawn to the mud" they pulled the bike backwards and back onto the tarmac.
On we went, up the hill, meeting some cars and vans going the other way, usually on a sharp blind very steep uphill corner (did I mention.......).
Anyway...we got to the top and the lay-by where the glamour shots were to be shot.
The view really is beautiful.
IMGP1341.JPG

Onwards.... discussed joining the convoy and heading down the pass and riding to the Green Welly via Tarbet.
Hot coffee at Inverary won out and we headed away from the "Rest" and down the hill and along he A83.
The roads were pretty quiet and it was an enjoyable ride.
Coffee at Inverary, followed by more "photoshoots", using a drone, of the Bandit and the Pan coming over the humpback bridge as you come into Inverary.
Had to do it a 2nd time as the Bandit accelerated away from the bridge too quickly for the Drone to follow.......cue sarcastic comments from "Mr Spielberg" (Kawasaki rider Martin, who was flying the drone).
Onwards to Lochgilphead (just because its a nice road and theres a big petrol station / supermarket there).
It was starting to get colder, and Tony could not be late back, so we headed back home via a quick coffee at Inverary.
A nice spirited run to the Ferry at Colintraive.
IMGP1342.JPG

IMGP1343.JPG

It was really starting to get cold, and on the run home from the ferry I was starting to shiver, first time all day I felt cold.
Glad to get home and a hot bowl of home made chicken soup :)

A shorter run than usual, but we enjoyed it.
Hopefully get a few more in.

Ride safe folks
Don
