What did you do with your ST1100/ST1300 today?

Today I discovered why that Buick tried to turn me into a hood ornament:
Did the switch fail at some point during the ride? I normally brake with both front and rear for no particular reason other than they're there. An inertial initiated brake light or switch would work well in that situation especially if your an ATLATT kind of rider.

I definitely made time to get the rear brake caliper off. Ended up being more important than finding my brake pads have about 3mm remaining. The pistons have been extended for a long time as rear brake pads wear a lot slower than front brakes. What I discovered from the initial reason I wanted to remove the caliper, was to inspect the condition of the brake pistons, knowing they likely have quite a bit of junk on them and wouldn't want to compress them back in the caliper when replacing the brake pads without cleaning the pistons.
It took me an hour to clean the surfaces of 3 pistons before I was willing to recess them again and replace my worn pads. The benefit of splitting the time before I replace the pads, is the cleaning has been done and would only need to pull the 5mm allen brake pad retaining bolt and recess the pistons to be on my way instead of approximately 3 hours for everything in one wack.

Oil & filter change, changed the air filter (found pigeon bits on the floor of the air box, and feathers inside the filter itself - that damn bird got everywhere, no wonder it smelled like I was riding a BBQ for a while).

My bike was clearly last serviced by the legendary Hercules himself given how tight the oil filter was.

Final drive oil change, drive flange moly. Swapped out the sump & final drive washers while doing the job.

Cleaned up the gear lever pivot, removed & greased the side stand and centre stand pivots (because, why not while you're under there).

While working on the bike found a random black wire under the seat. Gave it a tug, not connected to anything, but neatly taped up with a label that reads "switched positive" - thoughtful labelling whoever you were, thanks.

Pulled the calipers off & cleaned up the slide pins & pistons. Pads due pretty soon but have life left in them.

General check of the electrics, no signs of water ingress, and the hunt for the dodgy earth will continue some other day, the bike has behaved itself for a while.

Edit: oh, and it transpires that the metal bar that supports the primary tank when accessing the airbox has gone AWOL. Anyone of you kind folk know if they can be purchased separately?

Part no. 17891-MCJ-750, available at Partzilla for $8.72. Look under "rear fender".

You sir, have perfect timing. Many thanks. You posted while I was standing at the local parts desk (non Honda dealer), and the guy was having trouble...

As to why I was there so soon.... when I went to check the oil level, check I'd remembered to torque the bolts up etc, the final drive filler plug was loose. Tightened that up and SNAP followed by a lot of profanity.

If I can't get the threaded part of our the drive housing, it's a 10 day wait for a local shop to have the time to do it.

(Part #2 on the final drive fische, for those that are interested).

The torque value on the oil fill cap is only 9 ft.lbs. It doesn't take much. (The drain bolt is only 14 ft.lbs., in case you were wondering.)

Thanks, I know...I was just overly ham fisted.

Not an expensive part to replace, but more annoying that the bike can't be ridden until solved.

Installing new driving lights to supplement headlight. I also installed some undermount color changing lighting.

Yesterday I rode from Robbinsville NC to Cherokee, gas up and began to tide the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rode 240 miles then got off to gas up and grab a candy bar. Got back on and rode the BRP to mm 60 then got off the road for the night. Finished up the BRP and hit 250, 29, 28, and a couple other local roads to get home:)

Got on the BRP at noon yesterday and exited fir the night around 8:45PM. Beautiful ride, as you can see from the pictures:)

Did about an hour of parking lot practicing on low speed control with another forum member. Had a great time getting to know each other, and a great time putting our bikes through their paces.

Thanks, ericiflyvfr for suggesting it.

Looking forward to doing this regularly, so all you OKC area members, look for future posts if interested!

This lady was slowing down our progress trying to filter with this trike and causing some HOV and Lane1 issues until we came up on her six. Got me think if this 3-wheeler is a motorcycle or car from the splitting, drivers license class, insurance perspectives.

While researching, found this CHP pamphlet on the topic of safe and legal lane sharing

Decided to flush the clutch fluid today. Found a pile of black mud in the bottom of the reservoir. Took the time to get it all out then pumped a full bottle of fluid through to hopefully clean it all out. I have to assume its the original fluid from 2006 judging by the look of it. Here's a pic of the mud I scraped out. Never seen fluid that bad before.

Wow! How many miles on the bike? I'm sure you're right about it being original.
