What did you do with your ST1100/ST1300 today?

What did I do with my ST1100? I ruined it. Not knowing the history of my bike, I figured some preventative maintenance was in order. It's a 95 with 60 thousand miles, so I figured a timing belt, coolant hoses and slave cylinder rebuild were a good place to start. I ordered the parts and printed off additional info found online, plus i have the Honda and Clymers service manuals to help. Over the past week I tore it down and reassembled with only minimal difficulty to be expected. started it up, no issues, put the tupperware back on and decided to go for a short ride since it was so nice out. I got about 6 miles from home and it started really rattling, i pulled in the clutch and it immediately died. I coasted to the side of the street and tried to restart it. Only it knocks really bad. Called my brother in law for him to come pick me up with his trailer and take me home. Got it home and hoping it was something simple, but already expecting the worst, well I tore it apart again, much easier the second time, and saw the tensioner spring for the timing belt fell off the upper retainer. The timing was approximately 1/4 turn out. I retimed it and tried to start it, but only a slight knock and wouldn't even attempt to fire. So that is how I ruined my bike. I don't know what to do? Should I part it out? Buy a replacement used motor? But new valves and replace them? I'm sick in my stomach since this happened.
Dang, sorry to hear this.
There should be some ST1100 gurus here shortly.

Just had a look on ebay & in UK ST1100 engine for sale around £250 guaranteed for 30 days.. Less than 60,000 miles on it so may work out cheaper to replace the engine with a good secondhand one.

Im sorry to hear about this. I would first retime it like you have and do a compression test. This will tell how much damage there is. It could be a matter of just reconditioning a head. You would have to tear it down and inspect for piston damage, but the compression test is where I would start.

Looking on eBay here in the states, an engine with shipping and handling is at least $600 with no warranty.

by 1/4 turn do you mean one of the camshaft timing pulleys was 90° from where it should have been?

If so, sorry to hear about your bad luck. BTW, start a new thread with a specific title regarding how to proceed from here, this thread is too generic to get much attention.

Oh man, I hate to hear this. This is why I would be leery about doing my own valve adjustments. I checked my valve specs at 16,000 and all were in spec. I have my 32K check coming up. Hoping they are still in spec. If not, I'll have to decide whether to attempt it myself or take it to the dealer.

I just finished my first ride on my newly purchased ST1300. Went down to Oceanside and up to Palomar Observatory and then home via the Ortega Hwy. If you are ever in SoCal you gotta ride the Ortega from Dana Point to Lake Elsinore. But today I found out that riding up to Palomar Observatory is even better. What a beautiful day and an incredible bike and ride.237535

I went on a ride to Home Depot, because as usual, I need a PVC pipe fitting and none of the 50 or so I already have in a bag are the one I need. Nine miles of pure joy and scenery.

Welcome to the forum.

Is this safe on poly carbonate surfaces?

Absolutely - It's the only thing I use to clean faceshields on my Shoei helmets, and anything plastic.

So sorry to hear - I know the feeling. BTDT on my CB 900. I had to pull the engine on that one, but I got it running again.
You most likely bent one or more valves. You need to pull the heads to check, a big job but doable.
Good luck, sir.

Completed my first “Heroes Ride” yesterday. 30 motors escorted 420 bikers from the Hollywood Bowl via Hollywood and Sunset Blvds to LA Natl Cemetery and then on to East LA PD and Fire training center. Pretty fun owning the most popular streets of LA and the controlling major freeways. Hot day at +80*F, but well worth the sweat equity.

I've done Ortega Hwy dozens of times. Palomar, I don't suggest that unless it's during the week., NEVER on the Weekends! Palomar is the "Local Racetrack", and you have two major factions up there. Those that are out to better their times going up and back down, and the actual "Locals", that have been known to booby-trap the corners and if you get behind one while riding up or down will do what they can to make your experience, a bad one.

Just be very careful up there!

back in the early '80s when I lived in OC I was coming back west on Ortega when I passed a Ferrari club going the other way. Must have been 30-40 Ferraris, mostly 308s and 512s, which were current in that era.

The locksmith had a tool (believe I posted on this before) that can remove the lids for these locks. From there he was able to repin it to match my bike’s ignition key. So one key to rule them all.

Missed that post. The only one(s) I saw said the 1300's lock couldn't be rekeyed. I'll have to look around for a locksmith that can do that. There was a local smithy who could do anything with locks and knew everything about locks. He sold the business to two guys who I'm sure have PFNs. It's like walking into a 7/11 and finding the clerk doesn't know where anything is and doesn't know how to work the register or make change. LOL So I don't go there anymore.
