What did you do with your ST1100/ST1300 today?

Well...going to fire my 1100 up and ride to my favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch. Then do some light grocery shopping all on my ST1100. Still surprised how much stuff you can get in those hard bags:)

About a quarter mile from my place a car on the side street looked like it might not stop. I tapped the brake levers and the rear locked up.
Having practiced locking up rear brakes as a kid so much made guiding the bike to the edge of the road relatively easy.
Took a look at the rear caliper spun forward with the stop pin hanging out.
Next I walked home, took a dump, grabbed the golf cart and tools.
The golf cart gave me cover as the bike was just past the crest at the intersection. Funny how my mind was suddenly alert to every safety
detail.

It was a reminder to not work on the bike when suffering jet lag, lack of sleep etc.
Which tells us that you didn't follow the correct procedure when installing the rear wheel ;)
You need to tighten the stopper bolt (14mm head) BEFORE you tighten the axle bolt, or you can cause damage to the rear brake line that is routed between the caliper/swingarm hump.
What locked your wheel up was the caliper rotating forward PINCHING/CRUSHING the rubber hose!
Please make sure you didn't damage the internal lining of the hose, or cut the hose itself.
Those damn rear hoses are always on back order for 6 months or more.
Your also going to need to check/inspect the rear caliper mounting bracket now.
Look for damage (spiral/flutes) inside the stopper plug hole, and make sure the downward pressure didn't damage the lower edge where the front silver clip holds the pad retaining clip in place.
If it smeared the metal downward, and created a loose condition, it can/may cause your rear brakes to bind and repeat what just happened again.
Glad you got safely off the road, and back home without injury.
:WCP1:

Finally went and got a gallon of the finest Chevron premium money could buy!
Replaced the air filter, bleed the cooling system (changed last week), installed LED turn signals, brake lights, position lights, changed the oil and filter.
I knew the oil was overfilled when I looked at the sight glass before I bought it but was very disappointed in the the hair under 6qts of oil that I drained from the crankcase. That is a 7 qt drain pan, it is not that full when I drain my 5.7 Chevy pickup!
PO said he knew nothing about bikes and always took it in for service but enough of that because I cannot know for sure who is at fault… but my crankcase is relieved!
Starter valve sync up next and definitely installing the LED headlights before all the Tupperware goes back on. Feels good to almost be done for now, winter projects list already in the making.

Went out for a quick ride. Upper 60's low humidity my almost 30 year old bike was acting like a 17 year old. Scrapping a peg while making a left turn. That's why you need to make sure your undercarriage is clean too! Well maybe we were both feeling 17 tonight.

Today I rode 3 ST1100's (again...)
i) returning the black '96 to a friend (who took care of the MOT on my two rigs... which of course both passed with flying colors again  )
ii) returning the '94 into the shed
iii) then grabbing my '00 and off to my GF's place...

Glad your OK Pat! Man, your experience probably saved you from a much different (painful?) result.

Now off to bed for some needed rest

Starter valve sync complete, LED bulbs in place, Hella horns installed, Tupperware back on. All we need to do for a few thousand miles is ride!

Finally received all 5 rubber dampers and aluminum inserts for the drive on the 1100. Didn't realize how bad the old ones were until I had to use a soft hammer to get the new rubbers seated in the hub. Had to use a brass drift and hammer to get the retainer plate in position too. I had noticed the retainer bolts had evidence of red Loctite on them, the manual doesn't call for it, but thought it wasn't a bad idea so just had blue and used a dab on each before torquing to the required 15 ft/lbs. Absolutely no slop in these babies now.

Reading previous post #3007, Igofar says the tightening sequence for the 1300 is caliper stopper bolt 14mm before axle bolt. Is the 1100 different as my Clymer & Honda says disassembly as caliper stopper bolt, axle nut and axle pinch bolt in that sequence, but only Clymer says assembly in reverse order?

Caliper pivot first, then axle, then pinch. I think 51, 80 and 20 ftIbs.
Upt'North.

Headed out at dawn. Rode through the Kettle Moraine Scenic road. Stopped had breakfast. Dodged the worst of the rain on the way home. Now yard work.lol
