Ride For Cambodia?

Sorry to hear that, Tip. Maybe next year (Hanoi to Paris? :D)

George, I hope for the next 4 years I could take a year sabbatical to ride from USA to EU, then EU to SEA. That would be an EPIC trips of De life time! after you guys return, we can plans on it eh!

Joe, A man gotta do, what a man gotta do. I can't be playing for 3 months while projects on its way :(

We'll miss you, Tip...but I'm not surprised you decided to stay and keep the job.
Smash sent a GoPro video camera and two mounts. Thanks Ash.
Now the learning curve... gotta figure out where on all these rental bikes and yet to be determined helmets, I'll mount this unit.
I think we're going to need a pigtail to at least a couple of cigarette lighter females. Hope these machines are on 12 volts.

Can't imagine the machines aren't 12V. I'll ask at the ride forum. Walmart has a 2 and 3-port cigar lighter outlets, I'll pick up a couple and modify in the IN side to crimp terminal spade connectors. Figure I wanna be able to charge phone, 'puter, and camera battery. Easier to do on the bike while riding than trying to find correct ACV in a pinch.

George, put a fused SAE connector on the battery, then make up an adapter to the Cig. socket for anything that needs to go there. Less chance of an accidental short than the spade connectors.

I like the idea of the fused SAE pigtail. Thanks Larry.

I ordered 5 flat and 5 curved adhesive mounts for the GoPro from B& H photo. That ought to give us plenty of flexibility as to where to put this unit.

I am considering bringing only a smart phone ( leaning toward the Samsung S III ) and shutting down ALL service to the phone. It'll be to costly to actually use the calling and 3G data features, but the stand alone GPS will come in very handy as will the WiFi for Skype, posting, surfing and email. I will check if that idea is flawed or not.

I can bring a first aid kit and a harmonica, but I'm thinking I should leave the flute at home... ;)

Any news from those looking to get an airline ticket to this event?

Looking at a Garmin Nuvi 50 to carry with to SEA, $120 at Amazon. SEA maps set runs another $90. Any thoughts?

Would it be better to pick it up in Bangkok? I am willing to pay a share of the cost amongst those who will benefit from using the GPS and map set.

I was thinking the same thing. Just hope they're available with English.
Also, I've been looking into using my brand new nifty Droid Galaxy S 3 for usage as a GPS....grabbing local maps at WiFi spots. I 'll be suspending my Verizon service for the three months and only use WiFi and stand alone GPS.
Still researching....
Anyone heard from Dace?

Nothing new from Dace but heard back from Maren. She's in Mex right now enjoying a long ride. Sez she has 25 years experience over there, waiting to hear back from her about visa advise.

Also, she knows a guy in Ching Mai,,, that's the place Nata Harli is suggesting, 700 klicks north of Bangkok.

More to come...

Hey, ferries are a piece of cake unless yur in a semi. :D

Between that article and the Ride Asia blog I read last night (Malaysia, Thai, Cam, Laos), I'm psyched. :D

Just got off a Skype call with Kris Nijs (pronounced niece) who rode an ST1100 around the world for four years. He finished this trip ten years ago and spent just $36K USD total.

He is excited and even "Jealous" of this SEA trip. He jumped to tell me that he loved riding in this part of the world and that we should only bring a little bit of gear. We will be living off the bike basically and much of the stuff we would think to bring is available cheaply over there. Just an FYI to y'all

Here's his bike just after I greeted him rolling up to WeSToc '02 in Ashland, OR

A lot of the stuff he has packed on this machine was left at Ashland as unnecessary. He gave me a folding chair that he never used in the first three years of that trip.

I enthusiastically invited him to come, he declined as he is running several businesses in Peru. He sends his regards though. :)

I'm trying to figger how I could live in my house for $9K/year.......and it's paid for......
Can we see a RR on that trip??

It was ten years ago so figure that in too.
Far as I know, there is no four year RR. Instead, he kept an email list that he added to as he traveled. But according to him these emails, as riveting as they were, did not contain the details that his book does. That book is in Dutch and has a title something like "The Bike The Man The World"
Shane Silliker had the most complete on-line collection of his emails but it's a dead link now.
Horizonsunlimited.com still headlines his ride but no RR.
