Ride For Cambodia?

Hey - I'm haven't bought my tickets yet because y'all keep jumping around on the plan!
:D

Right now, I'm looking at arriving in BKK on Jan. 15. Then we'll all get to PP however we end up getting there. Originally y'all'd talked about going to Vietnam, then Laos, then back to Thailand. So, my big question - I only have a month so will need to fly back to the states on Feb 13th and I'd like to stick with the gang as much as possible - do we plan to be in Vietnam or Thailand mid-week following R4C? If the plan is to go on to Vietnam, then I'll probably plan to fly back from HCM City BUT, if the plan is to run up to Chiang Mai, then I'll plan to fly back from BKK.....

Dace, first I heard you were waiting for a firm plan from the fickle trio before you nail down a flight.
Please chime in often with your input and concerns as things take shape :)

If your waiting for a firm plan, you may be waiting beyond a reasonable window to get ticketed.

Here it as I see it today. Joe and me have tickets to BKK arriving 11:45 PM January 9th
George arrives a few days later. We will shop for last minute items including possibly a GPS with SEA maps. I will be going for a few massages.
From that point it starts to get fuzzy other than we will find our way to PP, Cambodia either by air or bus, for the two week RFC. After that we talked about a lot of things that we may still be talking about at the big dinner after the two week RFC ride.

I am interested in entering Vietnam which we can do right from PP. My sister lived in SEA for years and suggested a visa be in hand before getting to the Vietnam border only to circumvent possible problems that may spring up such as the visa office being closed or a small bribe attempt. Other than that, if we are patient, we can cross with visas obtained at the border. If we can't cross easily we can simply turn back toward either more touring in Cambodia or head back to enjoy beautiful Thailand.

Dace, if you want to fly out of HCM city, I'll make a point to go with you.

If we decide now that we want to do VN after Cambodia then we should mail an application into the Vietnam embassy. This will probably involve sending our original passport with two passport photos and wait about 10 days. I can go into Manhattan to get this done. Whatever you guys want to do. Joe and I can always do VN after everyone else leaves because we'll be in SEA for three months. I am not happy to send my passport through the mail, though.

I will be just as happy to return to Thailand or loop through Laos back to Thailand if it keeps us together longer and if that's what everyone else wants to do. There will be plenty of Thailand left to visit and it is an amazing country to see.

I feel like a "no firm plan" works for me, but I suggest you chime in with the ideas you'd like this trip to be if you need a bit more structure.

Remember, there is no leader here so take the bull by the horns if you want him to go in a particular direction. :)

Glad to hear from you, Dace. :)

I envy you guys this trip - should be a great time.

My friend Richard Winter, VSTrom rider, has been making his way round the world on a couple of different DL650's for a couple years now. He is currently in SE Asia, in Laos. You might find his blog interesting at least for the last couple of weeks.

Hey Don! Thanks for this great RR...I'm going to love the pics and write up.

Now why aren't you with him?
Oh, I forgot, you need to bundle up to go feed the horsies. :)

+1 I think little or no plan is the best plan.

Thanks for the links, Don and Danny.

Vietnam sounds like a lot of hassle when lots of Cam and Thai will still unexplored at the end of RFC. Just a thought. I think I'd rather spent extra time in Cam, then back to Thai (or a short trip into Laos, which appears pretty easy.)

Anyhoo, as Danny sez, Open Agenda.

So, looking at the most recent info.....

I'm still planning to get into BKK sometime on the 15th of January. I've discovered that I can fly OUT of Chiang Mai on February 13th. So that should give time to cruise some of Laos and make it to Chiang Mai so that I can fly out and y'all can continue bumming around for another month and maybe hit Myanmar!

:D

So, haven't bought the ticket yet (have to wait for payday) but I think that's what I'll shoot for. Does that seem reasonable to the gang?

Works for me....just curious though, when I searched "fly into one city and out of another" the cost of the tix skyrocketed.
Where are you getting this tix? I would love to do the same thing next time.
I would have done it this time if I found a reasonable price for a triangle type round trip.

Sounds like we have a "plan". :D

Chiang Mai has some allure for at least a few days after Cam, as does Laos. Hope we're able to rent 'n ride without hassle.

@Digiamo vayama.com is where I've found the best prices for flying to Asia.

Long ago and far away, (while I was still working) managers had a saying....."lack of planning on your part, does not justify an emergency on my part". So, I'm hoping we don't have any "unjustifiable" emergencies on this trip.
I also had a boss who once told me, "I'll do the hoping, you do the doing".
I'm just hoping we are doing enough planning to justify all our emergencies.;)

If there is planning that needs doing, between the four of us, at least one should catch it.
Let's get all our concerns out on the table now so everyone is comfortable.

As the boss says: "lack of planning on your part, does not justify an emergency on my part"

I'm bringing a first aid kit and a bit ca$h $$$
I am still going for at least half of the shots the doctor recommends.
I am setting as many bills as possible to "auto pay".
At least two credit cards (cards notified of this trip), passport with copies, Two ATM cards, Three pair of undergear,
harmonica, cloths on my back and an extra pair of quick drying hot weather pants and shirt.
GPS capable Android Galaxy S3, netbook, GoPro camera with extra mounts, helmet, summer Olympia jacket with removable liner, bathroom bag (hold the towel...we can get one there and have a souvenir)

I may be able to get all that in carry on luggage. :)

What did I forget?

Oh and most importantly.... AIRLINE TICKETS!

Good check list Danny. Don't forget to update your will before leaving. :D

Add:
'Lectrical device chargers and 12V connector for the bike(s).
International Driver's License

I'm ordering the "3rd World" medical kit, contains stuff beyond a first aid kit.

...this may be my opportunity to practice my cross stitch.:D
Thanks for the reminder about the battery to SAE to Cigar lighter and International Driver Licence.

Lets keep this list going....:)

I may not perform surgery on people the way George does surgery on ST1100's but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do sometimes.
Remember "Meatball surgery"?

George, Any word from Marina Rey(sp), the gal who lived in SE Asia? I was Skyping with Jose Vasques in Puerto Vallarta and he referred to her in regards to this trip.

Only in so far as she highly recommends Rider's Corner in Chiang Mai. She did say earlier she's gonna be in SEA in February but no hard info. She just got home from her Mexico trip on Saturday so I'll ping her again.
