Itchy Boots

The ADVrider boys will be sooooo disappointed. There's a multi-page thread speculating on which NEW bike she will choose.
CMF (or whatever the name of the Chinese knockoff bike company is) is mentioned quite a lot.
This Yamaha (?) frankenbike sure caught me out, although I honestly didn't have a specific make or model in mind.
It's a Tenere tank, but that doesn't guarantee there's a Yammie engine down there, and I can't see the engine cases on my phone.

I agree w/ what you said, except for calling it a frankenbike. Remember, she wants something that can be maintained anywhere in the world. Swapping the engine will make that more difficult unless she is going to be dependent on her buddies shipping her parts. Likewise, I doubt they breathed on the engine in a way that requires special parts and increases stress. Noraly has never been a hp junkie. I'd guess that they simply beefed up the suspension (she can always switch back to stock shocks), made changes to improve reliability and added some basic accessories - maybe a bigger alternator to power her gps, phone, and some more lighting. Depending on where the oil drain plug is, I'd add one of these, especially if protected by a bash plate. Since she is not mechanically inclined, I doubt it's been added.

What Norally REALLY needs is a trunk monkey who can pick up the bike for her.

From my reading, 1984-86, had some cooling issues and transmission issues with 5th gear. There are work arounds and no doubt these gents in Germany have this all sorted for her.
I’m curious how some countries will allow her to import the bike that old (re. emissions) more research on my part to clarify.
I also wonder how much weight they shaved off on this build.

My reaction in seeing what she's now riding was a shout, since I have one in my stable. Hers is an '87 - 600, mine's a '24 700. I love mine; no doubt hers will tick many boxes!

I am Yamaha-ignorant, that's one make I've never owned. Didn't even know the Tenere was made that long ago, I'm familiar with the newer S10 and T7.
Thought they may have just put a new T7 tank on some older model bike.

Should her new ride be a 1987 Yamaha Tenere, these are the specs. Almost 400 pounds, but over 6 gallons fuel.

She had a new 450 Enfield for her quick India ride and while she sorta liked it, I figured that wasn't the choice. I figured maybe the KTM 390 as she had some fun on that, and was hoping she'd avoid the CF, and the Honda had some electric issues in the Americas and Africa, but especially in Africa, she had issues finding someone who could work on it. While it was more reliable than one would expect from the load and abuse, I doubted anything bigger from Honda would be the choice, though maybe an old XL/XRL650 could have been a choice. I did see a lot of KLR wishes in her chat
She's giving me some inspiration to get the old XL250S running again.

It has always been my understanding that a Carnet du passage is official permission to bring your vehicle into a country for a certain time period, but you have to take it out of the country when your visit is over.

Looks like she has picked up some weight this summer. ...
And you haven't??? :D Or any of the rest of us couch potatoes? :D :D :D

I wonder how much income she's lost by not producing videos these last few months? And of course, living expenses continue. That could've had an impact on which bike she bought. Single cylinder, air cooled...probably not much to go wrong.

Chris

probably a lot of these bikes are still around across the world. She'll just blend in now mechanically with her surroundings.
Low tech can work well, if you don't push the envelope. She's proven that she is careful. She just needs the combo of range, weight and reliability.
Fun to ride is a big plus, which sounds like she has now.

I wish her the best!

I doubt she has lost any appreciable income (and no, I have no insight into her personal finances) because she still has 8 full seasons of videos to attract new subscribers, she's still selling her 2 video blogging courses, she has a new book and her IB merch on her website. New scarves, stickers, hats, shirts appear a couple times a year.

The new book has very likely offset any YT ads revenue, which as I say probably hadn't lessened.

Me too. I was kind of taken aback because I didn't know the Yamaha had a Tenere back in the 80s. As for someone speculation that she might opt for an old XL/XRL650 Honda, I have a a bit of experience there and these things are heavy and very tall even for me. I am not sure they would work for her.

I'll be interested to see the video on modifications. I was thinking that those were kickstart only but have never owned one either.

I totally understand her criteria, but at our mc club breakfast this week, a couple of the guys said she should have chosen the Kawa KLR 650. There are a zillion of them out there, people have already used them to ride around the world, they are simple to maintain/repair, and are almost bullet proof. Flies in the ointment might be seat height and weight.

You mean a bunch of guys sitting on their butts....TALKING about riding... telling HER what she should ride???
:rofl1:
Bet I can guess how many of them have ridden as many miles in the conditions she has ridden SOLO!!!!
Not a damn one of them.

Good point, a few of our guys grew up racing motocross, we have a number of guys who have done IBA rides, several who have ridden to Alaska. Most have been riding since their 20's (a few, younger) and almost all of these guys sitting on their butts eating breakfast will go out and ride a couple of hundred miles before lunch. Most are retired, with up to 60+ years on bikes under their belts. None of our miles diminishes her accomplishments nor do her miles diminish what they have done with their lives.

I would bet you know none of these guys or how many miles they have logged over their lifetimes, and your comment is speculation, at best. Let's scroll back a bit and see if anybody here has speculated on what she should be riding.
