What did you do with your ST1100/ST1300 today?

I like that the speedo is a little optimistic. Me being legal is more important than 3mph of inaccuracy. If the speedo was an underachiever it would be a different story. This saves me the cost of a radar detector.

I think that very characteristic helped me avoid a performance award yesterday morning. The car behind me was not so fortunate, as the Sheriff we had recently passed flipped on the lights and pulled him over, leaving me free to go on my way at a slightly reduced rate.

x2... This is exactly how I look at it. I have been giving some thought to trying a different size tire next time I replace the rear. I recall reading something about changing the turn-in speed with a different size/profile of tire and if it speeds up the turn-in and brings the speedo closer in accuracy, I will do this. I have more reading to do on this before I do this, but if it is not wise to do, I will continue to live with the speedo inaccuracy... not a big issue to me.

I'm on the fence about installing either one. I don't think I really want to offset the odometer.
Just a thought here as I have never had the dash on the ST1300 apart so I don't know if what I am thinking is doable. Reading this I became curious to know if it is possible to open up the dash and simply rotate the speedometer needle on its shaft so that it would read closer to the actual speed. On many (older) cars the speedometer needle was not indexed on the shaft-it was just pushed on and could be put on in any position. If this was possible on the ST1300 speedometer it would solve the speed indication problem and preserve the odometer accuracy.

I am asking out of curiosity and for the benefit of others if this is an option or not. Mine is off as well but it does not bother me enough to go through the trouble.
Would anyone know if this could be done?

Just a thought on that technique, the error is proportional to speed (more or less) so you'd have to offset the needle by some average error over a range of interest, and still have a little error here and there. For me its easier just remembering how optimistic it is at cruising speed and mentally compensating.

I do the same mental compensation. If the needle could be adjusted so that it is fairly accurate at your most commonly used speed range, say between 55 and 65 m.p.h., it might help.

Needle can be placed back on in any position, but since it is off by a percentage, not a fixed amount, you have to know what you want to be accurate at.

T_C is right. My speedo was off by 7.9% if I remember right. Not say... 5 MPH. 60MPH indicated was actually like 55, 80 indicated was closer to 73 and so on.

I'm on the fence about installing either one. I don't think I really want to offset the odometer. Can use my Garmin for the accurate speed. Wish they would make one that could just adjust the speedometer. I know the odometer and speedometer gets their signal from the speed sensor. Just wish it could be split and only correct the speedo though. Thanks for the other option though. I'm still considering doing it since I'm only off -5.2%.

I don't know how that is setup on the ST. I do know that on my FZ1 the signal went to the ECU and there it was split to the speedo and odo, leaving the odo unaffected.

Edit: the more I think about it I would venture to guess, and this is just a guess, the signals are separate because the speedo is a mechanically driven needle whereas the odo is a digital display.

As often happens here, this subject/issue probably deserves its own thread...

Anyway...

I haven’t looked at the OEM speedometer since I put an accurate Sigma bicycle unit on my classic 1991SSMST in the late nineties; additionally, then installed a Zumo 550 later. The OEM has always been hard to read anyway as I needed trifocals at that distance (didn’t get them until a two years ago).

BTW, aren’t the authority models equipped with accurate speedometers?

Made alterations to my water jug holder on the rear foot peg. Get to make the IB test April 9th if all goes well...….it will be, I hope, the first of many cross country adventures on the ST.

Have a look at the front forks, where the reflectors are.
I would not recommend that:
My PO had lights mounted there, which I removed - because they busted up my fender mounts, on both sides.
Tried a JB Weld repair, but as you can see that only worked for awhile. Now I'll likely have to replace the fender.

Buttoning up the bike after winter maintenance: Installed MCCruise, valve check, and other misc items.
Also finally figured out where to mount a voltmeter, without drilling out the plastic.
This little meter was only $9 on Amazon, and is water proof. Slightly snug fit into the opening there, and a couple of dabs of Superglue to keep it in place.
Not particularly elegant, but works for me.

Yesterday, while on my 180 mile ride, I test rode a 2019 Goldwing[emoji849] They have 2-2018 tour model demo bikes with just over 2k on sale for $20k. Good thing I dont have $20k for a toy, or I would gave 2 motorcycles again. If anyone close is curious and wants a test ride, Timbrook Honda of Winchester (VA) has a manual and dct demo models. I chose the manual model to ride.......both of their currentt demo bikes are black.

Looking good there, fella! I almost went over to Honda of Crofton on Monday to ride one (I was already in the general area) but decided I'd stick to my original plan and wait for retirement, then look for a lightly-used or leftover 2019 or later model. In the meantime, I'm fantasizing once again about maybe blowing this year's bonus on a Wee-Strom. No action yet, other than starting to stalk ads.

I see you have a GIpro. I installed one a month ago. Love it!

I've got 12 years til retirement, 15 if I want to get extra benefits.
