M77 Replaces Moly 60- Apparently So

Before I retired, I was going through tires every six months just riding back and forth to work.

I went to my local auto parts store (Bumper To Bumper) and asked for the Loctite. They didn't have any on-hand. I asked them to order it. I had it that afternoon- 40 something dollars. Auto parts don't stock it, but they all can get it. Check with them.

I'm thankful there is a huge amount of information on here for us all to take advantage of.

This is a point that can't be overstated; you [me] avoid stepping in a puddle and sinking past your boot, forewarned is forearmed and those kinds of sayings can't emphasis the fact enough that while these bikes check a lot of the boxes in the expectations list, there's many specific things [whether you're technical, mechanical or you're just gonna ride it] you will have to know at some point, hopefully at no worse a point than just being stranded... on a quiet back road... before dark... with no water... on your way back from a pig roast food fight where you lost your phone somewhere... in bear country... because it could always be worse.

Thanks for that, yes it shows $53. plus $20 for shipping plus taxes, so not much savings there.
I have already picked it up..

Try this Canadian supplier www.ohcanadasupply.com
I purchased my 8oz tub for $48.00 last year. The current price is $53.42. Still a far cry from $70.00.

I have not heard of Bumper to Bumper for over 20 years here in Ontario. I did not know there were any still around under that name..

Just adding Sodium to the intellectual eiunds here...but thanks to yo u all, engineers and greese monkeys s a like. I think I'm going to stay with historically proven. New and advanced, doesn't always always mean improved. I'm limited in experience. Used Moly for Helicopter splines in 33 and 90 degree boxes and tractor trailer power train.

I just bought a 2006 ST1300 with 60k miles on it.

I had a rear tire installed and asked the shady tree bike mechanic to clean and lube the drive shaft splines with Honda Moly 60 (I did not know it was discontinued at the time), based on proper ST maintenance suggestions.

I then read through 14 of this topics pages and wondered what he actually used.

He said the splines were in good shape (yippee!) and he used Pennzoil moly grease....

I'm leaving on a 6000 mile trip in 2 days, will the Pennzoil work till I can use the suggested Loctite LB8012 moly at the next tire change...?

Depends on what he used. If what he used meets or exceeds the requirements stipulated by Honda, you're good to go. If it only has 3% molybdenum, as many greases have, that is a different matter. If that is what he used, I have no idea if any damage will occurr in 6,000 miles, but why risk it would be my reaction.

Pennzoil sells a couple different moly greases that I saw in a quick search. You need to know exactly what he used so you can research whether it meets the requirements or not.

Why risk this type of damage starting on your trip?
Then you add towing bills, motels, dealerships, etc.
Fix it before you leave for peace of mind.

Yikes that’s ugly!

Here is what he used:

Pennzoil 302 EP2, any idea what the moly % is?

I live in northern BC Canada so I’ll see if the local auto shop has any in stock (doubt it).

I’ll call our local Honda dealer as well.

I’m a mechanical newb (which is why I took it toa mechanic to do all the necessary maintenance after I bought the bike).

If I find some moly paste is there a good how to video available (I’m leaving tomorrow)…?

Do not use any grease, the splines call for paste.
Even the stuff the Honda shop sells now is questionable.
Find some loctite LB8012 on line.

Also goes by #51048 and #234227.

NAPA stores may stock it. If one store doesn't, ask them to check others.

No luck at NAPA for the Loctite (well the could get me a pound of it for $176 Cnd in a few days!). We only have one NAPA as our town is only 80k population.

Lordco can get the 8oz container in a few days for $70 which I’m willing to pay.

But I’ll have to do it on the road, is that possible by a mechanical newb…?
