M77 Replaces Moly 60- Apparently So

Kidding aside, a tall order I know with this gang...

What I was thinking, was rather than make Moly a non-PC term, and user a persona-no-grata; why not make a “ST Critical Check List” (hyperlinked and summarized) of must-know/do things a ST member (ie noob) can go through and be edumacated and properly informed. In so doing, we won’t have these Deja-Vu and rehash threads, and save the noob from having to navigate every nook and cranny of this vast wealth of resources. This would be of great service and a unselfish use of veteran/senior members mentoring and leveraging their experience. Isn’t this the core of what this site does?

This checklist would be like an one stop shopping Summarized Table.

Doesnt have to be a big onerous effort, just add as needed along the way, try to employ the K.I.S.S. principle. Mellow can ask for subject matter experts to volunteer, and try to keep I pithy and concise with links to the verbose details (as opposed to pointing to a 65 paged thread for example). The over riding theme being only the mission critical points.

But then you would eliminate all the oil, tires, moly threads ... :D

Then there's the issue with the correct spelling of Tire...

Well, it's not a bad idea but ... not everyone will agree on what is / should be done or used in many cases... one person may say you should change your brake fluid every time you change brake pads, one says it's not necessary.. It's a moving target in some cases.

The way I see it, we don't have any new ST from Honda to talk about so we might as well re-hash and hash again anything we can to keep things lively..

Me being a noob(compared to all of you), can I start an 'Oil and filter' discussion or a thread? It's NOT winter yet, though :D:slv13::d1:

I don't disagree - all three of my ST1100s have over 100,000 miles on them with just oil changes, brake pad changes, tires and few other consumables... :D

Well, the '05 required a few parts for it's 174K I put on it, but so far other then the clutch and the dreaded SMC issue, the 2010 has been doing good with 65,000K on it. The 2012 doesn't have enough miles on it yet...and I'm keeping it that way. As for the 2 '04s, mostly routine stuff...besides water pumps.

Uncle Phil, You're a much respected man of great influence.

Another such fellow is Mellow. LOL But seriously a sticky listing tried and true replacements might be in order even if only anecdotal. Or we can try and take this thread to 300.

So I received my allotment of Rocol Dry Moly Paste from Bike-Quip. Hmm...that looks familiar. Dug deep into my,'brought back from Iraq and forgotten', footlocker and viola! Looks suspiciously like, 'lubricant, moly, artillery". So, I conducted a very scientific test as recommended in other threads about testing moly...

I guess I shouldn't have kicked that 5 gallon can into the burn pit! Oh, Rocol is on the top and we were using the howitzer moly lube for our M14 sniper rifles instead of Lubriplate 130A which was a sand magnet. Well, you could get one shot off but you better not miss as you were kicking the op rod trying to get the bolt open to reload.
But I digress...:soapbox

I added an update to the first post of this thread. When I first created this thread I did not know that there were two different part numbers for the Moly 77 in Canada and the US. Because these two part numbers may not be the same product I wanted to point this out to preclude potential confusion.

See the additional information I added to the first post and let me know if it is in error.

Thanks to Dave (dduelin) for finding this out- see here.

Thanks to both of you Dave and Andrew. Some of the confusion has now been demystified!

So with the US/Canada part number distinction now being made, is the consensus that those of us in Canada should continue using our white tubes of Moly 77 Grease Canada PN 08798-9010CH? It is what I have been using for the last 3 tire changes (don't know what the dealer/tire shops used before that) and my splines look great.
