Just curious then; is it the case that beginning with the fault cleared, the timing advance calculation doesn't initially use the knock sensor input, until a specific rpm is exceeded. And then once the routine switches to the OP AMP, AD converter, laser cut resistor, one of those components is already destroyed, or do the components used in that routine function until they get too hot.
Just going by what I've read so far, In the ST situation, there seems to be some improvement in performance with failed knock sensor circuits between pre and post 08 ECMs. It almost seems to me that Honda might have said in the second version, we have to use this knock sensor technology to meet specific emissions, it's not very durable [maybe even inherently doomed] but we'll make sure the default mode provides comparable performance to ignition systems that don't incorporate the technology.
Which might mean refitting or rewiring [whatever it takes] a pre 08 with any post 08 ECU really is problem solved, just that little light you might want to cover up.
