How fast have you had your ST?

Have seen 145 indicated many a time on the ST. Never pushed it to rev limiter because unlike other bikes that only stumble at the limit, the ST seems to nearly kill the engine when you bounce of the limiter (which would be a bit dangerous at a buck and a half).

My ST has a consistent weave at high speeds, but it never feels like it is building and never worries me. A buddy rode it and after a high speed run told me he was terrified by the weave. He was like "that bike has something seriously wrong with it". He was used to a CBR1000RR.

I also have a CBR1000RR which has seen 185 indicated a good number of times, so I know what he was feeling. The 1000RR has HESD (Honda Electric Steering Damper) that makes it absolutely rock solid at all speeds. If you're used to that, I can see how the ST would be terrifying. I guess it's all about knowing your machine.
Don't worry about the rev limiter. The ST1300 will not hit the rev limiter in 5th but it will in 4th at about 130 and a couple of times this has happened and startled me as I thought I was in 5th and not looking at the tach of course I thought something let go in the engine when it cut out. I have done this a few times.

The weave is hard to explain. On a recent long ride I had the opportunity and the will to see how fast it goes more than one time on the ride. The first time I got a little weave going at a GPS indicated of 125 or so and the GPS recorded a max speed of 128. It went away at 120 then I came back up close to 130 and got the weave again. The tires were 40/42 that morning but I did not have the preload hardened up - it was set for the static sag I like of 1 3/16th". I had some stuff in each saddlebag as well distributed as I could weight-wise. Later in the day I has shed an insulated liner and it went in one saddlebag and when I let the pony run that time it went to GPS 140 steady as she goes. No weave and solid as could be. It just wouldn't pull 141 like it used to but at 55,000 miles I guess she still has most of what she started with. I tucked in as close as I could but it would not lift off 140. That's about 152 on my speedometer. I can't imagine the liner weighed enough to make any difference but it was like two different bikes. There was no wind to speak of and everything else was the same.

I've had my 2007 ST up to 134 MPH according to my zumo 550 with no weave/wobble/wiggling. I had the Honda top box and my dog's carrier behind me. I was also pulling a uni-go trailer. I have the Honda air deflectors, Calsci under mirror deflectors, and an oversized ceebailey's windshield in lowest position. I only did this for a few seconds because the trailer usually wobbles if someone just looks at it. :( I was out in Wyoming headed to Yellowstone on a road that was going slightly downhill over a very long distance. It was in July 2008 and it was about 97 degrees that day. I've attached a pic so you can see my setup. Some performance mods I have are Turbo city's FPR at 61 PSI, air box mod w/K&N air filter, and Staintunes without baffles. :cop2: Yeah, I also got a speeding ticket that day about half and hour later for doing 85 in 65 that's why it's so memorable. :(:(

That's gotta be the fastest land-based Jack Russell Terrier in North America :D

Problem with the ST is that 120 feels not very different from 60, just the white lines go past faster. On my VTX, 120 feels like you're screaming, very fun. On the ST, 120 feels like, OK, yawn, so what do you want me to do next? Which is also very fun in a different way.

Summed up perfectly. I hit 120 on the ST without even feeling it. On the VTX, I'm afraid to look at the speedo.:mw1: Very different bikes.

My FJR will do 148 mph at 5000 feet elevation. Just took out the drz400sm a few days ago and it will go just a little more then 90. It's stock, so it has about 35 hp. The klx250s will get to 81 mph on a level road with no wind. Downhill with a tailwind I've had it up to 91. :D

I've been over 125 gps like 4 times, twice with a wobble, not fun. One time 135 gps. I pulled into The parking lot, of the Embassy suits in San Luis Obispo, ( Westoc), I showed the guy next to me my gps speed (135), he showed me his 136 mph 2 up (who could that be?). There is always someone faster. I led a group of nubee's on a dirt ride out of Reno (on my V-Strom), around Pyramid lake and off 65 miles to Gerlack(fun town). I would ride ahead and check their progress and count their dust clouds with my binos. It was a graded gravel road so after awhile I started to speed up. Finally I was going 100 mph on gravel, then thought how it would feel to crash, so I slowed down. I stopped to wait for them , and here comes one of the younger guys that went back to find 2 stragglers. He pulls up and says he hit 110. There will always be someone faster. I think the tail box is the cause of my wobbles, but I can't be sure.

Was the pup with you at the time?

+1.... Earlier ST's had little split-rings that fit around the mirror mount fingers to increase their holding power, my '05 didn't have them, but I put them on. ("clip, tube" P/N 95002-02100)

Drew

My '05 has the little rings.

I concur that a top box may have a negative effect on handling/stability at higher speeds(>115mph or so). My ZZR1200 was particularly sensitive in that regard. I leave the tail box off if I am anticipating a rather spirited ride. I have found my STeed firmly planted without wobble at ~145mph indicated. Why is it that when traveling that fast and when one should be extremely focused on the road and machine, you just can't help checking to see how fast you might be traveling? :D

So who has taken the time to read through all of the reply's to see who has gone the fastest? Not me. :wind1:

Otter, D-Day and I tried to get our ST up to Ramming Speed the other day... damned Dean Wormer.

Uh wait, wrong vehicle.

:D

110, and that was safely passing two Harleys. They saw my flashing lites and waved me by. All on straight road and lots of vis. All-out cruizing at 90 is a nice feeling. The bike just purrs. Ride to your OWN comfort level, not your comrads. Take care!!
