Rear wheel and tire removal time

I'm guessing that when you get a better paste and remove the wheel to replace it, you'll find that stuff separated just like you found it from the tube.
No disrespect intended, but have you not heard of tooth paste from a squeeze tube? :rofl1: (sorry I could not resist that one) Yes, paste can be purchased in tube or tub form.
 
I ‘spose youre right. (Damn that hurt). I’ll give a report on the M77 status and how many miles it was used.

Not looking forward to the redo in the drive way. Thats what i get for not calling snarky San Fran men on the white curtsey phone, eh? As if a mech’s white phone is white for very long.

Regarding paste...
Real men use sand paper, leather belt or a bowie knife. Toothpaste is for girlie men

The omission of the CH was not my recent experience. I bought a new tube of Honda Moly 77 only a few weeks ago. The local Honda dealer did not have any in stock so they had to order it from Honda so I presume that it is the current version. He showed me the computer screen of the Honda parts ordering system where it said that the Moly 60 was discontinued and was replaced by the Moly 77. The Moly 77 displayed in the Honda computer system included the CH in the part number for the Moly 77. What I physically received does have the CH in the Honda part number on the label. It is the PST-77 manufactured by PoliSi Technologies- see the attached pictures. As you wrote it does have the same consistency, colour and feel of the old Moly 60 paste.

This might be a Canadian only thing? In the US there is no CH in the part number and in the Honda Interactive Network parts order system the old part number for Moly 60 Paste 08734-0001 is superseded by 08798-9010 (M-77) As a parts manager in a Honda dealership I'm in HIN and Lightspeed everyday. I ordered some about 2 weeks ago. I checked the printed 2018 Honda Pro Chemical catalog along with Honda IN and a common parts inventory application called Lightspeed for the old number. Everything I access points to this part number for Moly 77.

Maybe it's Canadian, as I have the same Moly 77 tube as Andrew. But I think I got it for installing the cams after a valve shim replacement, as I still have a tube of Moly 60 for the rear wheel splines and I seem to remember following instructions to use the Moly 77 on the cam lobes during reassembly. :confused:

I thought that maybe the P/N 08798-9010 without the CH suffix is the previous version of M-77 and the P/N 08798-9010CH (with the suffix) is the newest version of M-77 available since the name also changed from M-77 to Moly 77. I would imagine that you would know this via the parts computer system however. Would it not be odd for the P/N to go from having a suffix to it being removed? As far as I know the tube that you pictured is what we used to get in Canada but with my recent order I received the CH version. Doesn't really change much I guess but I am curious to know if I received the newest product available or if Honda sells two different products in Canada and the US. I don't suppose you can see what Honda distributes in Canada so there is no way for you to know or to tell what the CH suffix means.

Well the 65% Moly Loctite just came in. It is so viscous that the cap and brush will stand straight up when pulled out a bit. The M77 Paste (actually grease) with the red/white package (no CH suffix) was much less thick, and probably runny in comparison. Night and day folks.
 
Here is a blind comparison done today with M77 and the revered Moly 60. Two samples on a paper plate and then applied to a ST1300 spline. Which is which?

In the end.... does it matter? Honda has recommended one then the other for years on all shaft driven motorcycles from low powered Shadows to high powered Goldwings and STs and like 'oil related' failures, 'moly related' final drive failures on Honda motorcycles are statistically non existent.

If Moly really works by attaching itself to the surface/pores of the splines, does it matter of the grease/paste is > or < 60% as long as there’s enough to fill the gaps and do the protection required of it? The excess or method of application shouldn’t matter as long enough gets to where its supposed to, yes?

Seems to me that using a 65% moly paste is just good fire insurance over a 40% moly grease. The numbers are in your favor, even if it’s overkill. The problem is if not enough moly gets to where it’s needed, thus not getting the protection necessary.

OK, I talked to American Honda this morning and the part number ending in CH is not available in the USA. For all intents and purposes it does not exist in the American Honda parts network. Dealers in the US cannot order it with the CH. Then I called a Honda dealer in Montreal. In the Canadian Honda parts network the P/M with no suffix does not exist and they cannot order it. PM me, maybe we can figure something out.

Thank you very much Dave for your time and effort and especially your offer to help. With what I recently procured I am OK for a good while now and have no immediate need for Moly paste. However, if for no other reason than pure curiosity, I am going to take what you have written and send it to Honda Canada just to see what they say about all of this. Based on previous history I will not receive a response to quickly however.
