What did you do with your ST1100/ST1300 today?

Rode about 400 miles from my home south of Greensboro NC to my wife's best friends house in Canton GA. I opted for the scenic route by going west to the NC mountains and then down into GA rather than the faster super slab route through Charlotte and Greenville, SC.

Didn't stop many times to snap pictures, but I did manage to grab a burger from a little hole in the wall restaurant I used fmto to frequent when I was a camp counselor in Andrews, NC. It was every bit as good as I remember, and the view aint half bad either.

I let my son take my ST for a ride. I'm laid up for a couple of weeks so to keep it running. Instructed him on warmup just as idle came down and first bar appeared on temp guage. He is a competent rider although hasn't ridden in a couple of years. Got to hear how it sounds when passing by.

Pulled the wheels from my 1300 to get a new set of BS T32 GTs installed today.

I love Hondas, motorcycles, cars, small motors... But the 1300 baffles me in comparison to the 1100 at so many turns.

To pull the rear wheel I need to swing the mufflers out of the way?! Seriously, how would one do this on the road? 8mm AND 6mm bolts holding them in place?

<Scratching head>

Anti-seize going on all of them.

Ugly profile on that rear BTW.

The reason you're scratching your head, is because the muffler mounting bolts are actually 12mm rear, and 10mm forward near the footrest.
The muffler clamp bolts underneath, are also 12mm. But yeah, why couldn't Mother Honda use the same sizes?
Well, perhaps I should qualify these statements: they are such on my 2008 ST1300. (Although I doubt they changed for your 2012-spec ST.)
And it seems to me, it would not have been impossible to design the machine to allow axle removal without disturbing the mufflers in the first place.

You probably wouldn't do well with British tool sizes....
He was correct with the sizes of the bolts, as they are 6mm dia. x 28mm long, and 8mm dia. x 45mm long.
You may have been confused by the size tools it takes to remove them :doh1:

You sir, underestimate me.
I am fully conversant in Whitworth, British Standard, and LochLauren Legends tool nomenclature, functionality, sizing, usage, implementation, etymology and literature.
(Totally BS-ing here.)
But actually you are quite correct - I use 10- and 12mm sockets and wrenches to REMOVE the fasteners mentioned.
Frequently wrong - but never in doubt...

I got my titled and tagged in the state of Florida. During Covid, you have to make appointments with the DMV to do these kinds of transactions and it's generally 10 days out. Darn it.

I had been riding a little bit with my signed old title in my wallet, just in case I got stopped, but I never did. Now, I can ride without fear of getting pulled over.

Oh, and my son and I played an irresponsible game. He has a Suzuki VStrom 650 and wanted to see what happens if we were side by side at 40 MPH and both laid onto the throttle. He had me out of the hole, but I caught up in about 2 seconds (my RPM was to low) and I was doing 110 within 3 seconds or so..... This is the fastest bike I've ever owned.

Oh, and the wife didn't like our story when we got home.

What gear were you in at the start of the roll-on?
Sounds like you weren't quite prepared for it?

I wasn't. @ 40 in cruise, probably in 3rd or 4th keeping the RPM's low. I should have dropped down one or two.
Sounds like your son may have sucker-punched you here.
I'd demand a rematch. (Even tho he's underpowered, outmanned, and outgunned.)
And mom / wife need not know, if you do it right...

Been there, done that... and just this past Saturday as a matter of fact. The VStrom's a peppy little bike, but it lacks the grunt of my 1300, or my 1100 for that matter. :)

A couple of years ago, on a small casual group ride, a guy on a 600cc 4-cyl bike with an extended swing-arm and I took off from a light. He won the hole-shot, but I was just getting up to speed in first gear as I passed him, and stayed ahead.
