Well, that was a bit too exciting (battery failure)

New alternator, or 'just' a new regulator? Can the regulator be bought separately?
Yes, but they’re expensive from Honda. I was able to buy one online from an alternator parts supplier. Also, if you have an alternator rebuilding service in your town they carry spares too.

The regulator is integral to the alternator so alternator will have to be taken apart to swap regulators.
Yes but once alternator removed from bike, it's replaced quite easily by removing the rear end cover, no special tools required.

Might be worth a try if alternative is $$$$$.

Update: After much trawling It looks as though the RN-26 rectifier for this also on Aliexpress:

or eBay:

Again much cheaper than the Honda part...

Caveat: I say 'looks' like correct part. It fits Denso alternators, has correct terminations and main terminal post configuration however I suggest that it's tested/checked carefully before use to make sure it's compatible. If you're not sure what you doing, don't.

No reason but you would have to.open up alternator and work out a route for the necessary cabling which maintained the waterproof integrity of the unit.

And whould need to find a method for enclosing and locating the external regulator. Much harder challenge than on a car / van /truck.

I believe the regulator holds the housing for the brushes...
It terminates one side of them for sure… I would say external regulator not worth the aggravation given you can get them cheap as chips (aka ‘fries’) on Aliexpress and eBay….

Could you post photos of any labels/marks, particularly if it refers to Denso/Magneto Marelli etc… will help narrow down on-HOS parts.

Here you go:

CGD56
101211-1750
12V
DENSO
Made in Japan

I even have the alternator rebuild kit on hand if you need that Honda stock number also.

Brill, thanks @Al Gully...

So have found a guaranteed fitment rectifier, a bit more expensive than Ali or fleabay but 3 year warranty:

Considering that the cost of a new (aftermarket) reg/rec for my Africa Twin was in three digits, this seems like pretty good value. But that invites the question: is it just the AC/DC rectifier, or does it regulate the output as well? I had presumed the part with the heatsink was the regulator and that they were two separate components on the ST.

Either way, I have yet to pull myself together and start tearing the bike down, but I have delved into the Haynes manual a fair bit already. @Al Gully, thanks for your PM! I'll try to find a solution more locally, since the UK is doing its best to live up to its island status, but will keep you in mind.

Yes, two separate components...

I would try regulator first, unlikely rectifier has gone kaput... but if you want to avoid having to take it all apart again then change both...
