Shipping out of boston!

Ill hit every stati
If you do highway 50, start looking for gas at the half tank point. Fill up in Ely before you head for Delta.
IIRC, Fallon has gas, Austin has gas, but I don't think Eureka does (don't remember).
Ill hit every station. Im looking up closures and smoke now. Isnt looking very good. Got my first whiff of smoke today. Smells a bit like cotton burning. Gonna head east today somehow. 101 has been very, very nice. Cant post pics due to the slow conn but am heading for eureka this morning for a battery and a library.
Im a bit pissed about $4.75 a gal for gas. Cant wait to see what they get on hwy50!

No, his practical side is showing.
Why be satisfied with nibbling a morsel, when you can eat everything on the whole table?
Most of my trip has been planned like a slob! The paper map shows me the neat things to aim for. As far as age, i have the senior paper maps one with the big letters!

The music was off as i rode thru the redwoods. I kept thinking about the generations that had seen them before me. So big and so silent. I felt like i was in church
Im heading inland on rt36 now. I really want more coast and dont want to leave at all. But, i guess it has to happen sometime!

What a day! Left the misty cool pacific and was greeted with an unexpected redwood park again. And then the ***** hit the fan! Started steep climbs and decents. Hairpins were more common than guardrails. Miles of burned forest and thick smoke. Im lousy in corners but for a guy that loves them, rt36is the place to be! Scary hairy for me tho! No pull offs and i burned a half tank getting thru there.
it was so hot, and dont give me that “ its a dry heat”line! It was hot heat! Had a gallon of water tho so i was fine. And then the last 40 mi was this kiddy coasterride, which was wonderful! Another day in paradise!
Grabbed a motel that has a broken hot water faucet and took a cold one. I didnt mind at all!D3AF9078-F493-4959-9D7C-6E68A12CBBD1.jpegB351A304-BAD2-446B-BED9-EFB7FB7763C5.jpegEF37A666-9F9C-4D2A-BA66-6E5C67D612A2.jpeg0D88DE3C-BD98-4E8C-8886-A7BC8F756640.jpeg3AEF0919-40C7-421E-B456-32A55DBC23F4.jpeg

Depending on your preferred route, it looks like Hwy 88 and 50 in the Sierra are closed now.

Yea, looking at maps now. Kind of a bummer. But, its a bic country and i have the time. I was told 36 was part of the dixie fire and i was suprised i got thru. Parts looked like the moonscape. Charred and dead. What a shame. Still a beaut tho!

The dixie fire is on the east side of the Sacramento Valley in the Sierra Nevadas. I am guessing that you are in or near Red bluff, if so, the best route is down highway 99 to highway 70 then to highway 20 to I80, which will put you between the dixie and caldor fires and as of today both were still open. Check here for road conditions.. https://roads.dot.ca.gov/

What if i head south, to the cooler weather(!) and take rt 6?

You can take 395 out of Reno to Lee Vining, then SR120 to Benton and pick up 6 there. 395 south is open. Make sure you gas up in Tonopah, no gas between there and Ely, NV where you can pick up 50 again. There is an alternative thru Bakersfield that I mentioned in a previous post.

Yea, spent a chunk of time looking at maps. Looks like another hilly ride to begin and then 80. I really dislike freighters! But the salt flats are on the other side.

that's the fun part about riding northwestern California. 62°F at the coast, 100-105°F a half hour inland.

Dunno if you've ever heard about this, but when it gets hot soak your T-shirt in water, put it on under your jacket and leave the zipper cracked just a bit. Evaporative cooling works great in our hot/dry conditions. I also pour water into the helmet liner to soak it as well.

FWIW, yesterday I was riding in 105-112°F, so I had to use that technique myself.
