Ride For Cambodia?

I got all my funny stuff on with Wild Wednesday coffee this week so I'm sober and staid... I too stopped the smoke over 30 years ago and have no desire to restart.

Dace, really glad yur gonna do it. Still waiting to hear again from BDonald. (Come ooooooooon, Bob!)

I'm committed to going but haven't pulled the trigger on dates or flights. Plan to meet Danny in Bangkok,,, we haven't really discussed travel plans to Phnom Phen yet. Sure would like to ride the coast ride but might be impractical.

Also, gotta investigate a post-Cam visit to NZ and/or AU. Calling Kreis Weigel,,, got yur ears on?

So, a new adventure awaits. Current circumstances are forcing me to take this step. Bucket liSTs don't wait forever. (High time to start spending some of that retirement money.)

Also, Dean from Australia, one of the principals for this event, has informed me, "The More, The Merrier", so anyone else on the bubble, prick it with a pin and get on board.

George, don't forget to let the OZSTOC crew know you're showing up, I'm sure they'll be some great hosts and would all love the chance to meet you and whomever else shows up.

Good idea, Joe. Thanks. January should be good time to be down there.
I'm in. Booked my RT ticket, arrive in Bangkok Jan8, return Apr9. I'm trying to figure out if I can do Australia in the same trip. I'm 95% sure I have a bike swap worked out with a fellow from Melbourne. I've only checked a few flights from BKK to AU and now I'm wondering if I should have booked one-way to Thailand? Suddenly 3 months seems like it may not be enough.

I'm still thinking about Australia. Haven't brooked the "length of time" subject with Deba yet. Don't think I'd stay three month, need to be home long enuff before Moonshine to build up another Kitchen Pass. :D

Hadn't thought about a bike swap,,, I don't have anything anyone else would be willing to ride. :D (As to renting there, probably cheaper to buy a beater dual sport and just... GO RIDE!!!! Sell or give it away at the end.

MY BIL reminded there's lots of stuff which can kill ya in AU! (snakes, spiders, jelly fish, crocs, not to mention an occasional arrant 'roo. :D)

Have you thought about the PI? Again, might be biting off a bigger chunk than the picnic basket can hold. (Gotta luv a mixed metaphor.)

Oh, are you going with to Cam? If yes, have you logged on to Ride For Cambodia Fan Page at FB?

Geo

Haven't looked at RT Bangkok - Sydney tickets either

Also thinking RT Bangkok - Cebu City PI

:D

Yes, I am planning on the charity ride. Side trips are optional. I can return to AU in 2014 if need be and I'm still alive. I'm sure there is plenty of stuff to see in Cambodia, Thailand and even Laos to occupy our time. If I don't go to AU this time, I am looking into a short bareboat sailing adventure out of Phuket if I can find a couple (or more) folks to go with me. I'll even volunteer as captain. So for those needing a few days to kill whilst in Thailand, this is a possibility. I'm sure Digiamo would consider these options also. We've got plenty of time to plan.....and dream.
Have not thought about PI, but I could do an insert. :D I looked at the Ride for Cambodia site and the list of scooter maintenance stuff. I'm still resistin facebook.

I'm in on the sail, Captain Olegeezer.

SEA (SE Asia) will take up my three months without a problem. Especially if we cross interest on a Vietnam leg.
George is doing some very interesting research on bike purchasing in Chaing Mai Thailand, and will likely apply in Bangkok too.
I'll stop shopping and start buying an airline ticket this week... Prolly Air China $1155 JFK to BKK one stop in Beijing for 1:20 arrives in BKK
same exact minute as you Joe. I'll be waving at you as we approach to landing simultaneously on what I assume will be two parallel runways. :please1: ;)

Wow, that looked nice!! My brother toured Khe Sahn back in "68" but I don't think he's interested in returning.

Met a rider in Oregon while on a ride of my own...he took the same tour but challenged the fear of returning. He couldn't bring himself to exit the aircraft when he landed due to terror. Long story sort...he not only met and shared back slapping drinks with ex-NVA but was planning his fifth trip back to take a motorcycle tour. This guy finally lives in peace.

Pletty of good finds as one searches "veterans return to Vietnam"

Time heals all wounds I guess. A chapter in US history I would like to erase. But maybe we learned something good?
Any feel for how many are committed for the Cambodia ride? Like George said, "the more the merrier". Same thing would apply on a sailboat side trip.

Joe and all, I just purchased my Air China RT fare for $1,190 USD ... JFK departure on Jan. 8th arriving BKK at 23:45... the same minute Joe lands :) :)
And yes, I checked to make sure BKK has two runways :rofl1:

All seats are at the window, returning April 9th

Grab a couple of those "barf bags' when you get to BKK. They could double as sea-sicknees bags in case we go sailin.......
Wonder if you can rent a "junk" or they just have junk to rent??????

I'm plannin' to just throw in overboard anyway so why have a "middleman"?

Now, I'm interested in how we're gonna deal with the lea side of islands so tall on a sail boat, Captain.
They're like skyscrapers. Gorgeous! But we're not gonna get any wind behind them.
I'm gonna take notes, Captain.

I'm looking at travel insurance, looks like a couple hunnert for 8 weeks (mid Jan to mid Mar), includes evacuation if needed, covers MC, also covers world wide. This is just a first glance.

Haven't looked at air fares again but figuring ~$1400.

Haven't looked at those motor vids yet, Danny. That's up for this evening.

Visas appear to be a non-issue.

The one Bike Sale site I was looking at is North and East of Bangkok about 300 Klicks. Something more on our route makes more sense so still looking. (Found one interesting bike, an old Honda MotoCross 2-stroke with a new 250 4-stroke motor. Not street legal tho. :D)

Oh, I'm up for a sail too,,, covered by the same policy. This site is just an example, make yur own choices. Note their upper age limit is 66 so I would just squeeze in. :D

Joe, agree AU is a probably a future trip. I'd like to spend a couple months in AU/NZ alone. Same with the PI, it's a worth at least a month. I gotta get back below our own border too so choices gotta be made.

Keep planning...

Logistical stuff:
The discussion forum for Ride For Cambodia is back up, suggest we each register there. It's the "official" site for meet 'n greet, and requires no FaceBook, Joe.

(I'm having registration issues but I'm the first to try so we'll get it resolved soon.)

Also, two suggestions for international travel insurance. (Ya buys yur ticket 'n ya takes yur chances):

I found this one on-line: World Nomads

Dean from AU suggests this one: Med Jet Assist

(BTW, Dean busted an ankle pretty bad in Costa Rica just a few weeks ago, spent a week in hospital there and got home without any of the "fancy" insurance. Sez now he wished he'd had it. First time he's traveled without it and never needed it before. Just shows to go ya, insurance premiums are to insure ya don't need the insurance. :crackup)

I've signed up on the forum and am just waiting on Dean to approve it. Meanwhile, I'm also looking at Good Sam Travel Assist as the emergency insurance since I'm already a Good Sam member.

Meanwhile, looking at flights to Phnom Penh and travel shots!

Welcome Dace. I made my first post there today asking if we can buy bikes in Thailand and ride them over to RFC in Phnom Penh. Hopefully that is a possibility with a cash donation instead of having it tied to the sale of the bike.
Looking forward to seeing you in Cambodia. :)

@Digiamo - yep, saw that (which is why I haven't settled yet on where I'm flying in).

:)
