Old Enough To Remember?

Scared the "beep" out of the tellers long time ago, Friday was pay day went to cash my check. In those days they closed at 5:30 pm sharp. Got off work a bit late so rushed down to the bank made it two minutes before closing time. Being late didn't have time to take off my helmet , got asked politely not to do that again.

I did the same thing at Arco station and assumed they got a great picture of me not robbing their store. Did take off helmet after that though

I remember when you got like 12.5% interest/anno on those...

Now you're lucky to see 4.2%... on which you'll actually get charged with 25% capital tax...
Tally this with the annual inflation you'll find that savings are humbug, rather spend my cash on some nice rides and touring across the peninsula named Europe...

I still have the 8mm wind up movie camera and light set just like this one that my parents took out at Christmas to film us when I was very small. I still remember the smell of burning tinsel and the blinding hot light.
They were like airport landing lights.
They would melt the chrome bumper on a Kenworth at 100 feet.

mothers using washing boards
when the teachers were allowed to throw stuff at you
when we got a spoon of malt as a big treat
when there was no such thing as a fridge or tv with more than 2 channels
when the toilet was a hole in the field sometimes and paper was a docken leaf
and obviously when phones were on the end of a piece of wire in the hall or phone box and people used them to talk on only
and when one was allowed to talk to girls

In my "younger years" . . . I used to look forward to this magazine every month!
Ah yes, thanks Shuey. Sent me off to multiple memories of Scouting on a dreary Thursday morning… Small town Minnesota troop, dear family friend Scoutmaster Dale Nordstrom who keep the “outing in Scouting,” two trips to the high adventure wilderness canoe base in northern Minnesota, the Governor presenting my Eagle Scout award in ‘63, licensed Canadian wilderness canoe guide and staff of the BSA canoe base at age 17. Whitewater and winter camping trips with my son’s Explorer Post. Fond memories of my years as Assistant Scoutmaster and later a Scoutmaster who kept the “outing in Scouting.”

In 1995 the “Liniment Brigade” began its annual expedition into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and adjacent Quetico Provincial Park. Base alumni from my era and after, and family. Sally and I have become Emeritus but still join them in spirit. My son Doug leaves tomorrow for “Up North,” his 8th or 9th trip as crew member.

Thanks again. BTW, I still have the Boys’ Life reprint of neckerchief slides in the magazine which I continued to carve over the years. Another lifelong skill (among MANY) and hobby Scouting gave me.

Oh yeah, on the first day of basic training the top Drill Sargent asked if there where any Eagle Scouts in the motley bunch - which began my leadership journey to OCS, combat, flight school and retirement. A lot of people to thank for help, guidance and encouragement over those many years.

John
