Old Enough To Remember?

Primarily Canadian memories.....................

The Friendly Giant was a children's television program from September 30, 1958 through to March 1985.

"Here we are inside, here's one little chair for one of you, and a bigger chair for two more to curl up in, and someone who likes to rock, a rocking chair in the middle. Now, look up, wa-a-a-a-a-ay up, and I'll call Rusty... Rusty?"

Chez Hélène is a children's television series. The program was produced at CBC's Montreal studios. It began its 14-season run on 26 October 1959, with the final program airing 25 May 1973.

I remember that show! It was on the Chicago-area public broadcasting station when I was a wee laddie. The theme music ("Early One Morning") was played on recorder and harp. I always loved the gentle approach the show took.

The Friendly Giant became a staple of children's television in Canada when Bob Homme (the Giant himself) moved the show from Wisconsin to the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, for those unfamiliar) and it was one of my favourite shows as a kid...although I always remember cocking my head to one side and thinking "Who keeps a rooster in a bag??"

Well, let's further put this in context.

At the beginning of the show you see Friendly (the giant's name) moving around furniture with his hand. A rocking chair or two will fit in his hand.

Fast forward to his interactions with Gerome the giraffe and Rusty the rooster

Rusty must be the size of a midsize car and Gerome must be some sort of brontosaurus.

In about 1975 I got into AM DXing.
Something fascinating and satisfying about hearing stations from further away.
From Cleveland Ohio I did not confirm where the Spanish speaking station was from.
I thought I found the limit listening to KSL out of Salt Lake City.
I met a kid a year older operating short wave conversations everywhere for real. Wow.
We didn’t have money to even have a short wave receiver.
We had only recently acquired an AM/FM radio at my mom’s insistence. Not that poor, dad was a cheapskate.
I got the AM radio passed down.
Somewhere along the way I learned to open up the back of the AM radio and turn some factory adjustment screws. Well that opened up the DXing game again with Johannesburg, South Africa being the most distant station received.
