Old Enough To Remember?

Went to the store yesterday and there was about 42 cents in change just lying on the parking lot. It was hot so it had been there a long time so I scooped it up. I guess nobody even notices change anymore.

I'm old enough to remember when a 1200 or 2400 baud Hayes modem was screaming! :rofl1:
I started out with a 300 baud modem - but it still beat driving into work in the middle of the night!
And didn't you love that 'negotiating' sound like something out of like Star Wars?

My first car had a leaky radiator and this was before cars had overflow tanks. One summer day I pulled off the road and decided to check the coolant level in the hot radiator. Luckily my face wasn't down near the opening but I had scalding all up my torso. Amazingly, haven't done that since. :thumb:

I'm old enough that I worked at my Uncle's gas station on weekends pumping gas at 11, and nobody thought it was weird. Also go sent to the store with a note to buy smokes for adults.
At 13 or 14 years old I would regularly drive a Ford 4-speed manual transmission pick-up truck 10 miles each way at highway speeds to pick up cigarettes or beer or both for the adults, and nobody thought anything of it. Can you imagine the consternation if that were to happen today?

The only advice that I was given was to wait around the store before heading home if the RCMP happened to be around.

Remember when a2-4 of beer was $5.00 including deposit?

Tru dat, Early 30 am at 300 baud was much better than driving in! What was amazing to me was all of those dedicated circuit 4.8 and 9.6 ATT&T/Bell boat anchor modems in the day, then you have these little Hayes boxes coming out.

At 14 years old, I and my 15 year old buddy ran his dad's full service gas station on the week-ends by ourselves.
We did it all - changed tires, changed oil, fill-ups, detailed cars inside and out, cleaned up the place, and made sure the cash register balanced.
Any shortages came out of our little bit of wages.
And any unhappy customers got back to him and then to us. ;)

When I was 15 I had a job at the local airport fueling airplanes. I not only ran the fuel island, I drove the fuel truck and kept the truck full of fuel. I also kept the local FBO rental aircraft ready to go, interiors and windows clean etc. as well as the office and flight school classroom clean. I also would clean and wax airplanes in my spare time. I can't imagine a 15 year old being able to do that now.
I worked off the cost for flying lessons and I soloed at 15.
