Django, if you've used the same oil in 9 Honda Motorcycles and have been pleased with the results, I think you have your answer. But it was fun, whilst it lasted.Understood. I just happened to be ready for the 1st oil change on the 2003 ST1300 I recently purchased with 73k on the clock and the last thing I want to undo is the reliability of obviously over designed engineering. This is my ninth consecutive Honda motorcycle purchase and avid user of AMSOIL which has never failed. So as I read so many opinions about Rotella, which I've only known for use in my cousin's tractor trailer, I was wondering if it's a diesel oil, being used in motorcycles. I don't know, so I'm asking, is Rotella, AMSOIL or Honda oil the Best for a 03 St1300........help. changing oil, filter, and final drive oil in the morning. Would appreciate the help
Thank you.JASO MA/MA2
I've not done a survey, but I suspect we have quite a few Joe's.[1] Not OUR Joe, here : )
This forum has a LOT of activity. Just look at the 'What's New' forum and the number of replies. Given how frequently some of our guys respond, one has to wonder if they are typing as they ride... Just look at the number of responses you got to your original question.I find an interesting dichotomy on forums.
On one hand, we tell new comers to search the forum to find their answers. Okay...
Then after repeating that ad nauseum, we find that the forum has no activity.
I've only seen the 1gal. jugs. 5qt would bug me with always having a quart left over. I can just pour a whole 1gal in and use the empty for the old oil.5 qt jug
I am sorry. I have stayed away from Rotella T6, because diesel oils have a much higher amount of caustic in them.

I'm wrong again. It is a 4 qt jug and sells for $21 at walmart. So 5.25 /qt. Thanks for the correction.I've only seen the 1gal. jugs. 5qt would bug me with always having a quart left over. I can just pour a whole 1gal in and use the empty for the old oil.
Is that a tenderizing technique for preparing steaks?
Well, called the dealership and inquired about oils. Was told to go with AMSOIL, which is cool what I used prior in other bikes. Was very surprised that it did ACTUALLY SHIFT SMOOTHER. Had no idea it could get better than it was. Thanks for all the help and advice, have a great weekendYes, that oil would work.
The reason why the 'old timers moan on another oil thread is that with hundred of thousands of posts on this website and millions of miles racked up on Honda STs the only consistent thing noticed is that ST engines work very reliably.
Igofar has done some actual research and had several brands of oil sent of for testing after being in a bike.
Outside of that, actual measurable results, it's all personal opinion.
One person says every 3k miles and never had a problem while another says every 10k and never a problem, another says synthetic, another says dino.
FYI, it's all synthetic, none of it exists as it came out of mother nature.
Change regularly with whatever gives you peace of mind. I personally follow the change interval recommend by MOM, I don't use her recommend oil but I do use the weight/temp chart.
YMMV!

Any bike will shift better after an oil change, with whatever oil you put in it....until it starts running in, or breaking down.Well, called the dealership and inquired about oils. ANY of the name brand diesel oils, Chevron, Mobil, Shell, Motorcraft, Valvoline etc. Did just as good as the pyramid scam oils![]()
Nope, Amsoil comes from dinosaurs grown in Amsterdam.Damn, so Amway's in the oil business now??![]()
Maybe I should have replied with a little more clarity. I've never felt such a NOTICIBLE change in shifting, engine smoothness or sounds as I did by by changing to synthetic. Had switched to synthetic in More than 12 different bikes prior to my ST purchase and never was the outcome of an oil change so NOTICIBLE. I'm sure I'll try other oils in the future, that said, but at a time when other oils outperform AMSOIL. I'm not a brand loyalist, I'm a result analyst, and being in motorcycle repair shops on a regular basis, you see the end results of certain maintenance practices.Any bike will shift better after an oil change, with whatever oil you put in it....until it starts running in, or breaking down.
I don't trust marketing, advertising, or what somebody is trying to sell, as being the best. I want test results.
And like T_C pointed out, I've spent hundreds of dollars over the years with UOA tests etc.
Amsoil, Motul, Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Valvoline sync, Honda, Yamalube, Suzuki and Kawasaki oil etc.
And just about every major brand of automobile oil (before it was changed to resource conserving etc.).

In MY bikes, Valvoline Premium blue, Chevron Delo 400, or Shell Rotella T (15w-40) did better than Amsoil and Mobil 1 MC oil.
Change it every 4 or 5k miles and your bike will out live you.
Money spent on boutique oil would be better spent on gas and Pies![]()

Had I garnered just 5 responses that leaned toward another brand consistently, I would have tried that brand. Trust me, at $60 an oil change ,not counting the cost of the filter, I'm definitely looking for something less expensive. But not willing to sacrifice The piece of mind that comes with knowing you've never ever had a problem with a product. Which oil do you use and why do you favor it? Not sure about most, but go through 4 rear tires a year. Riding is something I do every single day, barring snow or black ice. At least 4 2k mile a year, so I'm always looking for the best for any of my bikes. Riding from New Haven CT to Cali to Mexico and back this fall, so I'm asking, what oil has tested to be the best? Cost doesn't matter, I just want the best.Says the man who has used the same oil in his last nine motorcycles.![]()
