New Garmin Zumo XT

The tenor is that most step back to FW 2.9, the last known working version...

I have tried the rollback of the firmware mentioned a long time back in this thread. (@ST1100Y reported it and @Whisker Bill posted the translation) It describes the Rolling back to v 5.90 and it worked a treat, but I wanted 2.90 back on again.

I couldn't do it. Don't get me wrong, I went through all of the procedures, loaded the image from my Express download files on the PC - the B348400.update file, put it on a clean SD card - and went through the menu on the pre-bootup screen as described. All seemed to work OK. Except all it did was install 5.90 again. One issue might have been that the file for 2.90 was called "B348400.update.signed". It didn't like that, so I renamed it B348400.update - no faults, but I still got 5.90 installed.
I have the 2.80 firmware file too, that is called B348400.update (without the added .signed) - but that did the same thing - installed 5.90.

Has anyone else tried (risked) doing this process and got any further back than the 5.90 firmware please ?

Sure the thing wasn't connected to the I-net? It's known to be sneaky in the WiFi...

Good thought, but this process takes place before any software is loaded. There is a sequence which interrupts the boot process, and gives a small list of options.

Ah-ja... FW 6.2 released, those too stubborn to learn of course installed it... guess what? ;)

Yup, now the XT is rendered speechless... no navigation audio...

I don't have this newest miracle of mapping, but it's really disappointing to watch this thread.
The once-great Garmin company out of Olathe did not suffer from this firmware foolishness not so long ago, in their early days of civilian offerings - I recall posting to several online groups to brag about their phone support. I wasn't the very first, but not long after the GPS became commercially available, I in fact DID avail myself of the Garmin technologies, beginning with the GPS III Plus, and moving along several generations thereafter.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Not that I'm going to research it, but I just wonder how the company's profits compare to 15 years ago.
Guess it won't matter all that much which model we have, once the Chinese start blasting and killing our satellites up there in earth orbit. :biggrin:

And I have a hard time showing any compassion to those "users" there...
First of all was it upon their heavy requests to embed all kinds of creepy convenience/entertainment "features" into once solid satnav units...
And second are they literally camping outside the stores to get that newest Mikey Mouse screen while still warm and fresh out the mold, so they can brag* about it...
(* or complain on the forums the very next morning...)

photo viever, MP3 player, 3 dozen BT-protocols, phone interface, WiFi, curvy route, circular route (from current location), 3D map view, now that Garmin Drive App and the required interfaces...
Not astonishing that those overloaded mouse cinemas suffer one meltdown after the other down the road... especially since the outsourcing of the programming overseas, those code-monkeys don't even see the finished products, nor get even near to use them in RL...

My old Quest-I is too dumb to cause any drama while in use, same for the Zumo 220 I'd gotten for my GF... but we also don't expect (nor "demand") to get entertained by those gadgets... route planning is my job, the unit only assists me in following it...

I've not been out on the road with the new software, but I updated lat night and have just loaded a route and set it running. I got the customary 'Please Drive to Highlighted Route' spoken message.

Sometimes failure to speak is due to having OEM maps ticked as well as the Garmin maps,
Or being off route with auto recalculate turned off. The first time you fail to respond to spoken instructions, the voice stops nagging until you pick up the route to the point that it is trying to take you to.

edit - just seen your latest.

I think that much of the development is as a result of feeling the need to keep up with the other tech people that think that something that does everything badly is a far better product than something that does one thing really well.

As for the program coders ... well we have seen the result of those that decided that the software should ignore instruction to apply brakes when it thought that the driver had his foot on the accelerator; and the consequence of software that refuse to recognise a cyclist as a vulnerable road user.

Yep, there is a strong tendency sensed that Garmin wants to ban all 3rd party maps or attempts to use such...
They don't even want you to have the maps on your computer anymore, only on the device, only update-able there...

yeah, the better is the enemy of the good... or so...

The only time I have that happen is if the BT headset I'm using doesn't pair completely. Go to the Settings and click on Wireless Networks. My Sena 10C Pro will often pair the headset for music, but not for navigation. The solution I've found is to turn on the Zumo XT first (only a couple seconds is needed) and then the Sena.

I don't know which company is at fault. I just accept it and move on since I know how to make it work.

In this case, I don't think that it is an 'at fault' issue. It is in the nature of many Bluetooth devices to remain faithful to its previous partner. But with headsets and similar device with no means of selecting a device form a list, that loyalty doesn't last very long. If the Zumo isn't already turned on and is ready and willing, the headset will get bored waiting and it will wander off to find another partner to mate with.

I have quite a few such fickle devices at home, and if I reset the Zumo which is a frequent occurrence at the moment as I test things out, I have to either make sure they are not in the vicinity, or that the is ready searching when I turn on the headset.

And discovering that things haven't paired when I am on the bike outside the house - well forget it. A ride to the nearest countryside layby will sort that out. As long as it doesn't fancy the BT in the flash sports car that has just driven past.

I cannot load the XT maps onto base camp- guess common complaint is when you connect to base camp using the XT it goes through the set up and then closes base camp for no apparent reason.
After further research on the issue, it has to do with the "cyclops POI" loaded onto the XT. Garmin is aware of the issue but not sure if they are working on it. Supposedly you can go into the XT and delete these POI and the problem is fixed - the problem is how do you do it?
I am not too keen on going into the Garmin XT file system and start deleting things if you know what I mean.
Anyone else that has recently purchased the XT experience this?
Hopefully the Garmin folks will start to fix this issue.

Here is a comment from a YouTube post that is doing the same thing as mine:
"MY Garmin Zumo XT either locks up or shuts down (crashes) my Basecamp. I can see it's getting info from files on the left side of the screen but goes to the Demo map and crashes. I tried uninstalling Basecamp and updating Express and still the same thing. "

"The problem I had was that Basecamp would either shut down within about 10 seconds of coming up or would lock up. Cyclops gone, unit works fine. Thanks for your input. I hope to get out soon and see how it works. "

Alright, seems some users have circled down the cause of navigation audio to fail...

S/ome update should have moved all maps from 'internal storage/map' to 'system/map'...
after which the 'internal storage/map' folder should only contain the .gma and .unl files...

It seems this didn't happen properly on some units, leaving like 'City Navigator Europe NTU 2021.1.img' and 'City Navigator Europe NTU 2021.1 2.img' within the 'internal storage/map' directory... (plus the now actual active maps in 'system/map'...)
Having multiple maps active is of course confusing/seizing the kit...

After cleaning out the 'internal storage/map' directory the units give the turn-audio again as supposed...

Alright, someone seems to have figured out the culprit why Garmin Express is blocking the [install maps on PC] feature due to the firmware update(s):

on the XT you will find a [...\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml ] looking like this:

Code:
<DataType>
<Name>PreProgrammedNamedMaps</Name>
<File>
<Specification>
<Identifier>IMG</Identifier>
</Specification>
<Location>
<Path>.System/Map</Path>
<FileExtension>img</FileExtension>
<Extensions>
<dtlx:DataTypeLocationExtension>
<dtlx:ExternalPath>Map/</dtlx:ExternalPath>
</dtlx:DataTypeLocationExtension>
</Extensions>
</Location>
<TransferDirection>InputOutput</TransferDirection>
</File>
</DataType>

basically all you nee to do is to edit the 2nd line to:

<Name>PreProgrammedMaps</Name>

For safety you can also create an "Avatar" on a thumbdrive (or SDcard) containing: ...\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml
(read: taken an empty drive, create a folder named [Garmin], copy your unit's device.xml into there and make the mentioned edit on this...)
Once this storage device/drive is present on your computer, Garmin Express will read is as "Garmin GPS unit connected", and perform accordingly...

Safety disclaimer:
again, always make a full backup before editing a n y t h i n g on your GPS device... !!!

I am seeing same issue on this side of the pond, do not have any option to add city navigator 2022 onto Basecamp. Why doesn't Garmin just send out the fix in a software update? Instead of making the customers figure these things out for themselves?

I was able to go in and delete all the GPI POI files so now Basecamp will not freeze up on my XT and it will now load the map onto Basecamp as long as it is actually connected.

It appears methodical: they don't want users to plan/plot offline anymore...
They rather like to see you use the Garmin Drive App enabling them to monitor your activities in the cloud...

Shopping for micro SD card for the XT- any advice on storage size from the experts? I see it can take from 4-256 GB SD card. Prices range from $12.98-$49.98. How much do you actually need to store your routes from Basecamp, Which is actually what I would want it for?
Thanks....:think1:

Routes and waypoints do not take up much space. Assuming you will delete old routes and tracks, a 16Gb card will work. What does take up a lot of space are maps. If you plan to download Topo maps or OSM maps, you will need a larger capacity card.
