Looking Out From My Recliner In The Holler This Morning

Us up north dwellers have to laugh when the down south places get 4 inches and everything shuts down. For us it's just another day of winter. Do they use salt down there Uncle Phil?

Yes they do - but around here there is usually ice under the snow and it's laying on hills.
It's one thing to drive on the flat on ice, but it's whole different kettle of fish when the ice is on an angle where brakes are 'nullified'. ;)
I live on the backside of a steep hill and I can tell you if it gets ice covered, good luck on getting up or down it without some real thrills!

When I lived in Calgary, there was a large hill on the road heading into and out of downtown. When there was a snowstorm it turned into the Disney movie "Ducks on Ice" as vehicles tried to get up and down it. I was generally pretty lucky as my pickup had four wheel drive and winter tires but the issue was avoiding the other vehicles. It was akin to flying through an asteroid field in a video game.

When we bought our property (a hilly wooded area) 31 years ago we thought it would be real cool to build the house away from the road down a couple hundred yards over the hill with a curving downhill thru the trees driveway...and it was that first spring, summer and fall. But the first winter we had ice then snow then ice and we were literally stuck here for days unless we wanted to hike out. My son (who couldn't get to high school) and I literally used a pick axe to break up the ice in chunks and pitch it into the woods. Looked like the guys in the Disney cartoon frozen cutting ice.

Even today I was finishing up breaking up chunks of ice and pitching it. Hard on an old man, but about got it all done. Only took 8 days. I had a path cut out to get the bike out yesterday. Getting dressed to go for a ride as soon as I quit sweating lol.

In south central WI we had a beautiful Christmas. Then . . . it was gone within a week and nothing since. Our fields need the moisture!! I LOVE snow and have hope we'll get some.

I grew up hearing about the winter of '59. I hear it didn't snow until February that year and then didn't stop. I was born in March, my parents first born. They lived up on a hill with a nice straight 1/4-mile-long driveway. Back then the county would plow personal driveways, after opening up the roads. The county wasn't able to keep the driveway open and Dad had to hire a local contractor with an excavator and bulldozer, to keep it open. Never knew when he was going to have to get Mom to the hospital.

When I was in my late 30s, I was standing in line at the local parts store. The guy in front of me finished his purchase, turned and looked at me, then said "born in March of "59?" I said yes, and he left. I asked the guys at the counter who the man was . . . he worked for the county and was 1 of the guys trying to keep the driveway open!

I always hold out hope until May :)

Well we are getting more snow as i post. We still had snow from last week. So far we have about 2 inches and predicted as much as 5 inches. Temp dropped from 34F to 22F in about an hour.

We're supposed to see temps in the single digits Fahrenheit in the morning.
Good day to stay inside and keep the fire stoked! ;)
I'm not surprised as I figured it would be a rough winter because of how heavy the wild nuts (acorns, hickories, etc.) were producing early on.

Been snowing all day here in SW Ohio too. Uggh

I've been watching Reacher on Prime., and watching the snow pile up out the living room window covering my drive I only had cleared for a few days lol

be riding the quad with snow blade again tomorrow.

Originally in SC we were to get 5-8” of snow overnight on Tuesday, then yesterday it was lowered to 3-5” and I checked just now and it’s even further down to 1-3”. Probably just a dusting by the time it gets here and that’s fine with me.

That's what I call around here a 'Kroger' forecast.
Kroger is a major grocery chain in this area and when they get too much bread and milk on hand they tell the weather stations to call for a lot of snow!
At least that's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Kroger is about our only option here...or at least the major one. Some shop at Meijer or Walmart but most at a Kroger

Northern Florida is supposed to get some snow in the next few days. Apparently they don't have plows or salt/sand stuff so it will be a free for all.
I live in Central Florida and even though it rains pretty much every day in the summer you'd think the natives have never seen wet roads during the afternoon commute. I can only imagine how crazy it will be if the roads up there actually ice up.

it's 15 degrees this morning. I don't think I'll be riding today although I would if I needed to or felt motivated to do something to brag about later.
but I'm just not feeling it today.

I did, however, take off my slippers so I didn't get ice or snow on them and walk barefoot out to the mailbox today when it was 15°F. In a tee shirt.
(I'm originally from Buffalo, NY.)
