How fast have you had your ST?

I hit 140 indicated on my 97 ST 1100 on highway 376 south out of Austin. How could you not? You can literally see 20 miles in each direction, nothing bigger than a tumbleweed as far as the eye can see. My buddies took a 50 mile shorter ride (they cut the corner and met me in Tonopah) and I beat them by about an hour.

Its a crazy feeling moving that fast. Lots of fun.

Tim

I hit 110 on the Merrit Parkway. Once. And only for a few seconds. I know, that's kind of lame.
Up here in the Northeast, it's hard to find a road without any traffic on it.

I know the ST will go 130mph+. What amazed me about the time I rode it 105-100mph was how utterly dialed in and comfortable the bike seemed at 100+ mph. You could ride as ST for 5 hours at that speed. After a while it feels like you're doing 80.

Absolutely. I've tried to explain to people that with approximately 104mph at the very top of the speedometer, it is difficult to ride at any other speed!

No, really, this bike and my previous 1100 felt really stable at 100 give or take. Amazingly well tested in some Honda wind tunnel I assume.

Picked my ST up in San Francisco last night and drove it home to las Vegas through the night. There was a stretch on I5 that I must have run about 50 miles and never came below 100mph and touched 110. Pretty smooth. The question I have, for those of you that have checked by GPS, is how accurate are the speedometers?

Update...I now know that GPS speed is 93.5 at 100mph indicated. I also know that this ST is pretty stable at 148mph indicated...~140 real, but that was pulling a slight hill and the bike ran out of road not HP or RPMs!!

120 indicated. Professional rider on a closed course;-)

It was rock solid! At what speed, if any, does "the wobble" begin?

That last post of mine was for the 1300.

Now...another story about the 91 1100.

I had dropped my younger daughter at the ex's and was looking at an 80 mile trip home. About 15 miles along the interstate I'm cruising at about 70ish. It's a nice night, with a very bright moon. I can see headlights coming up behind me VERY fast. I'm thinking if it's a LEO he can't be after me, I'm just barely speeding.

Not one, but two, exotic sports cars...Italian or German...I'm not sure, come flying past me. Hmmmm, I'm thinking as I roll on the throttle, or maybe I wasn't thinking.

I got up to 100+ and hung about a quarter mile back. We traveled like that for 65 miles till I had to exit. As wrong as it was, and as dangerous as it was, IT WAS ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(not to be compared with the two births of my beautiful daughters)

I have had the bike to 110mph once (about 7 miles on the freeway). I have rarely seen 90mph since then, and never for any extended period of time. I have added a speedohealer to give me a true indication for the last 6 months.

Just once over 120mph as indicated by the speedometer. That was enough to know it can move if needed. By the way, no wobble whatsoever. In fact it seemed very balanced and smooth, and I felt like I was in slow motion. Interesting feeling.

I was thinking the same thing when someone else posted a ST1300P going faster than 122-126.

The first two years of the ST1300P actually lack the speed limiter. One of the agencies with ST-P's that my work services has 2-3 of them that will hit 130+. It's the later models that are equipped with the limiters.

 :yikes:  :holy crap: :yowza: :eek:4:

[Serious Rant] In engineering terms, loads on key parts of the bike go up as the square of the speed. By 'loads', I mean drag, hoop stress in the tires & rims, stress on engine & drivetrain parts, ... etc. The following table shows such loads as a function of speed, relative to 60 mph.

Speed, Loads
60, 100%
70, 136%
80, 178%
90, 225%
100, 278%
110, 336%
120, 400%
130, 469%
140, 544%
150, 625%

Just a quick burst up to 90 that we each seem to find on our speedo at times more than doubles the load on key parts. From 90 to 130, it more than doubles again. Scary stuff.

It only takes a slight imperfection in a tire and you are done with life at such high speeds. If a piece of fairing rips off and the bike no longer has symmetric loading...done. A rim cracks...done. A bearing siezes...done. One of many engine parts gives out...done. A tooth on the driveline failes...done. You hit something on the road...done. The road is damaged...done. Someone misjudges your speed and pulls in front of you...done.

I implore you to slow down. [/Serious Rant]

Might as well never ride again after reading that. :bow1: :bow1: :bow1:

Are you referring to a motorcycle favored by the majority of moderators? :D

Also: It's a bad idea on a long, straight road, to close your eyes and start counting to see how long you can drive straight. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks for this laugh I needed it!

142 indicated, on an empty interstate somewhere in W. Va. 20% downhill grade. Just had to see. I believe there is about 10% error in the speedometer, so realistic about 130. Bike is very capable and no wobble except when I'm doing about 5 mph then I'm thinking it's the rider and not the bike. By the way bags and top box were fully loaded, on a trip ya know.
