GPS Week Rollover April 2019 - May affect older (pre-2010) GPS devices

And where is your current speed displayed -- :rofl1:
I think you'll find kind sir that's there's no BLUMMIN NEED FOR THAT BECAUSE OF THIS GOD AWFUL NORTHUMBERLAND WEATHER AT THE MOMENT! I feel better for that ta. Plus to quote a good friend of mine, "if you've got time to look at your speedometer you're not going fast enough".
Upt'North.

Or dig out those big old paper maps...
News flash.....George Catt will not be affected unless there is a paper map fire. All this time I thought George was resisting change, but now I find he is ahead of his time. Is anyone surprised?

As long as it doesn't get in the way of the driver's operation...
Like I said:
on top of the dash, hence obstructing 50% of the driver's side windscreen... [emoji53]

... transmitted from a CAT S60 thing ...

This is funny - look who got caught and grounded because of the date rollover:

Somebody forgot to upgrade: Flights delayed, cancelled by GPS rollover

Motorcycles were unaffected, but Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft - well, that's another story. To be fair to Boeing, who have taken a few beatings lately, it was a Honeywell avionics issue, not a Boeing issue... and Honeywell did send out service advisories well ahead of time, which means the fault is entirely with the affected airlines.

Michael

I'll take being grounded because the airlines didn't update the GPS as long as the pilots know how to defeat the MCAS if necessary.

I had not been following this thread,, or aware of it's subject. So when I went for a ride yesterday, I was puzzled to see that my Magellan no longer knew what time it was. It was following the route okay,,, but the clock was way wrong. I knew that time is critical to gps function,,, so I did not understand how it still seemed to be functioning. Guess the next step is to pull it off the bike,, and plug it into my laptop, and see if there is an update available. Will post my results,, Cat'

Another 1024 weeks have nearly passed since then - the second epoch of week numbers will reach 1024 and roll over again to 0 in April of 2019.

I plugged in my Garmin StreetPilot, the first StreetPilot before numbers were assigned for updated versions. Expected it to fail, because circa is early 2000's. Found satellites fine, had correct time, even had correct date. Took it for a ride yesterday, well after failure date. It functioned as I remembered. Showed correct time and speed. When headed to a destination, it pointed to it correctly.

Fake news?

I didn't have this issue on my radar at all lately. A week or so ago I wheeled out my 1300 and ran it for a bit. The two Garmins I have on it all the time are my Zumo 595LM on the dash and a Zumo 550 between the bars. The battery was dead on the 595LM which can be expected after a long winter nap. I let it run and the batteries charged. The had both picked up a 3D fix pretty quick. No different than normal but this was before the rollover. That day I happened to take my 595LM and Sena20S in for my spring patching. I don't bother with the 550 since I don't have Lifetime Maps on it anyhow and why mess with it. Yesterday the neighbor needed a hand pulling the mower from his new John Deere and putting the blade back on as we are forecasted to get 6-12" of snow over the next couple days. Rather than walk over I hopped on the 1300 and rode over. I let it run for a little bit there and on the way home. The 595LM had a 3D fix right away but the 550 is still searching. I let it sit outside idling for a little bit but still nothing so I parked the bike. I can deal with that later. I also use a Streetpilot 2730 but didn't have that on the bike. I normally only run that on longer trips as I like the roll chart view for navigation on that one. Since it is rarely on the bike, I power it off my tank bag so unless I put all that stuff on the bike I can't easily power it up. I will take a look at that one later as well.

What did you have for breakfast? :rofl1:

Went for a ride on the Wee yesterday, and noticed the Zumo 660 was 1 hour slow, with no way to adjust it. The upside was that I had an extra hour to ride.

John

John you should be able to adjust the time. This shows time right there.

I don't think GPS functionality is a matter of the time, but of timing. Whether your clock is displaying the right time shouldn't affect GPS positioning. I think the devices ability to measure the passage of time accurately is the key. However my phone was minted after the prior Best By date, so I'm good.

Reading this thread I remembered I still have my first GPS a Garmin c330, found it, 237998it powered up and found satellites, admittedly slowly and calculated a route to a stored destination. The only issue it had switched from km to miles but that would have been sorted by digging into the menu. The maps where last updated in 2005, the battery no longer held a charge which was why it was put in a drawer in the first place.

Raymond, I just took another look at it, and it was almost 1 1/2 hours off! The time adjust on works in 5 minute increments. When I switched it from 12 hour to UTC, the minutes were correct. After switching back and forth from UTC to 12 hour format, several times, it finally came up with the correct time.

Well, it looks like my c. 2007 Nuvi 650 made the rollover without issue. I didn't use it to define a route yesterday but it did accurately report my location throughout my 200 mile ride yesterday. That's too bad because it eliminates one of the possible excuses to replace it.

I must have at least a trace of Scottish blood, as I hate throwing something away if it still works as intended. OTOH, I have also decided it isn't worth paying Garmin hundreds of dollars every few years to get new maps for a device whose internal battery no longer holds a charge, and which is badly outdated in terms of the features it offers. Oh well, it's still a reliable last-ditch backup navigation device.

2610 all ok,time and navigation working fine. This is a unit from 2006.These units really are an example of the (they don't make them like they used to saying).I know, I know they are old and new ones have allegedly better screens etc,its just that what it does it does very well.,I suspect Garmin had to stop supplying map updates in an attempt to sell more newer units.

Wow!! I thought I was the only one left using the StreetPilot. Must be the names. :)
