AZ 2005 build - Are you ready for another one?

I know this is no monkey bike, but whenever I look at your photos amazement comes to me of how much stuff there is on it. All these wiring, hoses, bits'n'bobs, subframes, brackets ect. This thing is packed, like someone chopped off two wheels from a regular passenger car and called it a day. I didn't get that sensation when was converting my f4i into naked.
Yep, 750 lbs. of stuff ! :giggle:

Today's progress.

I need to finish cleaning up the front cover, but 99% of the gasket has been removed.

I've started removing the heads. The right side is off.

I'll probably take tomorrow off and start back on it, come Monday.

@SupraSabre
What was the problem with the '05 engine? Wouldn't it have been possible—and easier—to fix it instead?
I'm just curious since you're taking it apart anyway.

The reason I only paid $1,000 for it was because the owner changed his own oil and didn't tighten down the oil drain plug. It fell out and then he ran the bike for a distance without oil. When it ran, you could hear something in it wasn't right. So, instead of trying to figure out what was making the noise, and that I don't trust any of the other areas that require oil, swapping out the engine was the best path to get the bike back on the road.

And as for the donor bike, a 2006 ST1300P, that was requiring a lot of work, I figured since the 2005 was in better shape then the 2006, I'd be better with the swap.

As I bought them both:

2006:

The 2005:

Although I don't have the red Tupperware (put it on the 2010, I sold my son. !st picture of this thread), so I'll put the black Tupperware from my 2012, on it.

And I got word, Partzilla has my parts on their way! :hat3:

I'm glad you know which bike is which after all that Tupperware swapping, because I've been thoroughly lost on them for some time now. In my mind, colors equate to years.

Sounds like maybe I need to make a chart of which bike, which year, and what color, which year! :unsure-2x:

:rofl1:

Well, removing the heads was the key to removing the engine! After removing both heads, I started on the engine mounts. the only mistake I made was to remove the rear lower mounts, before removing the upper rear mount. Once I fixed that, I was able to play with the engine until I got it sideways. Then it just scooted out!

I was then able to slide it under the frame and then set it to the floor (on cardboard).

I did, finally remove the alternator, but that lower bolt was a bugger! :censored:

How it all sits now! The heads are in the front box.

I think I'll put the rear tire and shock on so I can, again move to the side of the house and hit a gain with the pressure washer, and get it all cleaned up before putting the new engine in.
But I'm still waiting on parts before I can start on the engine..

In this case, not having two heads on the engine worked out great!

Anyone want a engine block? Just come get it! :rofl1:
Are these engines truly indestructible? Now that the heads are off, do you see any signs of damage from running without oil? I’d expect the most vulnerable parts to be the piston rings, crankshaft, and crankpins, though they might not be visible yet at this stage of the teardown.

Could you possibly help me and since you have it off, measure the outer width of the engine in the widest point at the heads level please? I have a very narrow gate to my back garden where my shed is, and I am struggling squeezing my cbrf4i with wide bars. My future naked st sits currently in the front of the house and last thing I want is to strip it down off the fairings and fail to go through that bloody gate by an inch.

I haven't seen. nor have I really looked for and signs of damage. I won't have time today to look, maybe tomorrow, I'll take a look at the cylinders and see if there is anything. When the engine was running, you could hear a noise that wasn't normal for these engines. What was making that noise, I have no idea.

Do you need the widest part of the bike in general or ?

Just the widest point on the engine please. I can turn handlebars and will strip it off fairings/crash bars. The widest then will be the engine I think.

Edit:
I found the below HERE

24 inch wide
22 1/4 H
22 1/4 front to back of oil filter
