2023 Iron Butt Rally

Still nobody went to the Great White North......???
But I'll bet Betty's Pies in Two Harbors MN had a couple visitors!
:pie1:

Gotta be saving some Canadian points for the 3rd leg.....unless there's a reason for not going international.

No reason that I can think of - Canada no longer has any special requirements related to COVID, etc. - entry procedures are back to normal, same as they were before 2020.

Would the forest fires situation be a consideration?
Forest fires can't be predicted, any more than power outages at a checkpoint.
The logistics, including start / end points, bonii, and all the rest, are planned out literally months and months in advance.
So that means, despite rumors and conspiracy theories to the contrary, the Rally Master / Rally Mistress does NOT have infinite nor imaginary control over the weather, to include forest fires and other natural disasters.
But it does make for great Rally stories...

Would the forest fires situation be a consideration?
Good point - that could well be something that the rally organizers have thought about. I'm not at home at the moment (I'm in Switzerland), so I'm not up to date on where the fires are. I think, though, that the fire problems are regional in nature, and not widespread enough to rule out the whole country as a possible destination.

Sleep bonuses are hard to pass up in the IBR. Everyone needs sleep, you might as well get points for it. And, if a rider does not take advantage, that will be noticed by staff and even if you finish safely, your chances of getting into another IBR will be very iffy.

With Leg 3 underway, I would think that tire condition/wear may become a concern as well as a scheduled oil dump and fill (I assume most run with 20k mile filters).
Regarding tires, does the IBR prohibit running Darkside for the rally?
I may have answered my question having read that several riders schedule tire pit stops during the rally, having their preferred riding choice delivered to the garage/checkpoint.

Just reviewed the Leg 2 bonus locations . . . 26 total. Easy to understand why there were only two main routes: this leg was all about the points and distance.

I've been keeping an eye on the two riders in Alberta, Canada and . . . am guessing the rider farthest north is heading up Rt 35 for some kind of eating establishment in High Level. It must be worth a boatload of points!
