2023 Iron Butt Rally

I noticed one of the riders stopped near Cafe Du Monde on Day 1.

Chicken, Chicken Alaska?
Maybe that would be too obvious.
Maybe obvious, but not out of the realm of possibility (or out of the realm of IBR history) for the rally master / mistress to throw an Alaska bonus out there, just to see who bites.
Leg 3 perhaps? Or even Leg 2, we won't know for a while.

Question (asking for a friend aahemm… ;)):

If the initial leg was roughly 60 hrs, how much of that time would be devoted to rest? Or maybe imposed?
As I understand it, there are points for rest however I see a large discrepancy in points in the standings. Do the top guys forego rest for points? If so, are penalties levied if you don’t rest?

Man, I have so many questions and this veil of secrecy leaves me wanting more…

Note to self: need to wrangle me an IBR finisher and interrogate… add to bucket list.

Can anyone tell me more about the participant with
the K-Bike with diesel engine?
Is this a converted BMW of the Flyingbrick series?
K75, K100 or K1100?
Thanks in advance.
I can't get into the list of participants of the rally from Germany.

Looks like a K100RS was the donor bike.

Spot walla summary tracking was pretty cool to watch. Looked like a lot of bikes through New Orleans...I can only assume for beignets...

Many drove along the coast, Florida to Texas, where we are under heat advisory. Don't know how they can do it! I get dizzy just walking to the pool here.

The 4 to 8 hours rest bonus was voluntary like in past rallies. 2001 was the first year to have a rest bonus but it has never been mandatory . Some folks are just wrapped different then most folks and need little to no sleep. There is a photo from the checkpoint 1 yesterday showing past winner sleeping while waiting his turn to have his paperwork checked.

Esti1300, about rest: not mandatory, like lddave noted. There's a window of 4 hours minimum up to 8 hours max for points/minute that a rider can get for being stopped. For Leg 1 it was 6 points per minute. So, different rest lengths mean . . . different point totals for the rest bonus.

The requirement is to get a receipt (a good receipt with date/time/location, that are current, not all businesses maintain current dates and times on receipts, you'd be surprised) which stops your Rally clock and starts your Rest clock. When ready to get back on the road, get another receipt (I always got mine at a name brand gas station and used the same pump both times (after I looked in the trash on arrival to see if the receipts were good ones). Also note, I don't completely fill my fuel tanks so that I will have a little space left to pump a final bit of fuel just before I'm getting back on the road and back on the Rally clock.

My ideal Rest Stop is where there's gas, a room, and something to eat, all in one place. Get gas, stop the Rally clock. Once off the Rally clock and on the Rest clock, I'd get a room and park the bike at the hotel. Walk next door for something to eat (restaurant or something microwaveable from the gas station) then return to my room to review where I'd been and where I was going for the rest of the leg, making adjustments as needed or if I saw better options. Load everything up to GPSs, notes put in the tank bag, then . . . call the front desk for a wake-up call, set both my alarms and . . . sleep. How long? 4 hour minimum, more if I can't plan bonuses for more points than I'd get sleeping. Wake up, wash my hair (well, it wakes me up and doesn't take but a few minutes, all earning points) load the bike and take off.

I'm pretty new to Basecamp routing. However, there is an interesting feature in the program. Once you have transferred your waypoints to a Trip, you can hit 'optimize'. The program then routes you in the most efficient manner. Given this feature, do any of the rally participants scan the bonus list into a computer, and use software to help plan their route?

I'd think there must be some IT guys in the IBA who either write their own software or use existing programs to help plan their route.

I recognize the limitations of software - for example the contestant would have to factor in some kind of range of difficulty to get the computer to deal with NYC's horrendous traffic in downtown Manhattan if he wanted to visit Katz's Deli. On the other hand, it is a pretty short hop from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Deli, then shoot crosstown and take the Tunnel under the Hudson and out. Being able to see the bonus locations graphically would help organizing the Trip, even if software was not used to help.

I doubt there is ANY mapping or routing technology that is unknown to this crowd.
Whether they individually choose to implement that technology is another matter entirely.

The latest update on the IBR Home Page is titled: "Detailed Standings Posted"
Follow the links and you get to the list of all the riders and their standing after Leg 1 to include place, name, score, mileage ridden and what they're riding.

www.ironbuttrally.net/standings/

or, you can just go here direct: www.ironbuttrally.net/standings/

Next, you can go here to see the same information, but additionally, each riders "Scorecard". Click on the scorecard number and you'll see where that rider went and how many points they received for going there.

Have fun,

Regarding mapping software . . . ALL the riders are provided a thumb drive with bonus files in multiple formats. On it are Bonus Numbers and their grid coordinates. I would guess with 99% probability that all riders are loading the appropriate data file into their laptops to begin developing their ride plan.
My first step when given the Rally Envelope was to load the data into Basecamp on my computer then . . . using the Rally Book I rename each location on the computer. Bonus Number, Name, Points, a code letter for what gets done there ("P" for photo) and any special instructions (4-6pm). Also, I subjectively look at the bonus list point values and divide the list into 3 or 4 groups and assign an icon. Red for high value, Yellow for medium, Green for low. It's time consuming, but when finished, I've got all that I need to examine route possibilities on my computer screen. The high values almost jump out of the screen. After that . . . it's trial and error to piece something together that looks within my capabilities plus a few extra in case I'm running ahead of schedule. I also identify the ones I'll cut out if I'm running behind.

Does that help,

Yes, thank you. I'd seen the standings page, but not the page with the scores linked to individual boni claimed.

It would be interesting to download the bonus files, and then have a program patch together a route with traffic, weather, road work updates and maybe even have it amend the route in real time (think a larger screen like Noraly uses). AI anyone? It is doubtful that one could load a mainframe onto a bike, but you wouldn't need that if you had cell or satellite service.
