Where did you ride today?

I rode from home yesterday 475 miles with a high temp of 101 going thru Chattanooga. Made camp here near Tellico Plains. Today I rode east across the Cherohala Skyway where 5300 feet and 66 degrees felt ice colds On to the Joyce Kilmer route to the Deals Gap store. I was on the “Dragon’s Tail” by 9 and had little traffic.

There were 2 Killboy photographs and 2 129 photographs already set up so lots of pictures to come!!!! Which I won’t buy……I turned around at the overlook and rode to both sides of Fontana dam where 2 guys had a scaffold half way down the damn working on a leak?

I rode south and picked up the East end of the Skyway and rode back to Tellico for a 1:30 lunch breakfast burger. 300 miles riding today and I’m worn out. Not many bikes out since it’s above many’s comfort zone in the temps.

I am expecting to receive a violation ticket in the post for this transgression. Stopped at the Central Memorial Hall, Ruawaro for a quick break, this is an excellent semi-local area for riding, empty roads, many many twists and turns. I was out for about 4 hours today and managed a mostly dry ride, slightly tarnished by very strong winds. Even the might 1300 was getting moved around a bit today, especially leaning hard into a crosswind around bends. The Racetech parts up front were as good as I hoped. A rear shock upgrade might be needed in the future although TBH its pretty good at 116,000km.1657355974342.png

A bonus second day of riding today; 18C and completely calm, that's my kind of winter's day!
I did a favourite loop to the north of Auckland, enjoying SH16 to Wellsford, then SH1 (being very well behaved on this heavily policed stretch) and turned off to Paparoa. The road from here to Oakleigh is magic, mostly empty and a nice mix of tight corners and sweepers thorugh farmland. Then back down SH1 to Waipu, and a turn-off around the coast road to Mangawhai, with a brief stop at picturesque Langs Beach (below). Even saw someone taking a dip, the waves looked lovely. I put the top-box back on today, but I think I prefer the bike without; a little more nimble, and less susceptible to vehicle wakes.

Rode to a Kawasaki dealership to look at a bike they advertised on their website....they didn't have it.....so I visited with ST 1100 legend John O. for a while before going home...Russ.

Took the KZ1100 LTD up to the Earls cove ferry and had a cheeseburger at Sharon's Grill-it! food truck. Another guy on a new FZ09 passed me along the way, then passed the car ahead in a very unsafe manner, with not much room to spare with oncoming traffic. Returned home and took the KLR650 up for gas. So not an ST kind of a day, but tomorrow....!

Not done much this year, diagnosed with heart disease (HCM) adjusting to new meds, then 4 weeks ago covid, yesterday and today felt really good and finally some decent weather, went for a short 55 mile jaunt each day and loved it, being back on the bike just feels right.

STopped at small village called Scotlandwell, looking over Loch Leven in Fife, there’s two Lochs with the same name in Scotland, one on the west coast, 23C bike running great and have now reached a young 51001 miles, that’s now 4000 on the same set of tyres, my previous bikes were 4000 on the front and 3000 on the rear, ahhhhh aren’t bikes just the best.

We had a nice ride, the missus and I, up to the Cove, turn around, out to Daniel Point, down to John Henry's Marina where there was outdoor music and all the yachties were assembled on dry land telling tall tales and bending the elbow. Worse than bikers them yachties.....i ought to know.
