VRR: high voltage

So you run it parrallel to the VRR leaving the black wire in place... and this then gives the VRR a much truer picture of the system voltage, it realizes it doesn't have to work so hard. Yes? Makes sense, also gives credence to those who advocate the whole ignition switch bypass modification (Norm Keller on my-mc has some posts outlining this in detail), also yes?

Well done, Ralph! PLease let us know if anything occurs to change your theory.

Good description of the process, Chris.

A follow up: it apprears the voltmeter i was initially using is bad, causing me to think the system was up around 17v. I bought a cheap analog DVM to try and test the VRR and is shows me around 15v. I decided to go ahead and take the time to soldier the wires directly to the VRR. So far so good. I need to check the black wire voltage at the VRR to see what i have.
Thx for your time.

Marty

My bike is non ABS. My Clymer manual shows black and white wires go directly from VRR to alternator. Does this make sense? Diagram for ABS model show black wire branching off.

My '91 is also non ABS. The black wire does 2 things. It supplies voltage to the alternator magnets, so the alternator will work and provides system voltage to the VRR. Don't mess with the white wire.

Update, with a new battery I'm running 13.8-14V on my Datel. Idling voltage @ 1200rpm is 13.2. I cleaned behind the VRR and reinstaled with heat sink grease bought at Radio Schack. VRR seems to run a lot cooler the few times I've checked it.
