The Paulcb Memorial Coldest Ride, Winter 2024-2025

I will resist the temptation to associate the MINUS teens thermometer readings, with the IQ of some of y'all here.

That was a great line. @Mellow should find a way to make that a sticky to be the first post of this thread each year. :D :D :D

Someone mentioned how it seems to be the same group in the thread. Well, I suppose there's a reason for that. You need dry cold. Those in Florida or California probably won't get many opportunities to post here because it doesn't get cold enough. And in Rome, NY when I was stationed at Griffiss AFB, we got an average of 12 feet of snow each year...in town. It never crossed my mind to buy a motorcycle there. I took up cross-country skiing instead.

So like now in Puget Sound, its cold...but not cold enough. And if it snows...it won't matter how cold it is later, it won't be dry enough.

BTW, I'm still waiting for my prize for making it into the top 10 last year. :D

Stuck!

So I gotta hope for another cold snap to show that I'm actually smarter than the average fool. Back in '95, or was it '96 the low in Tower, MN was -60. I saw a -40 when waking up in Duluth, MN and since the governor of the state cancelled all government activities and I was a graduate student I promptly went out to the street, unfurled an electrical cord and plugged the car in to get a jump start on the weekend (it was Friday). Driving 2 hours south we saw a high of -25 that day with noteworthy wind gusts. So at best I can get an IQ of 60 without heading into Ontario or Manitoba. Sound like I need a road trip!

That stuck quote makes me smile

Snow quit, since the sun was out earlier it sorta melted. Just went out in the car and I think the roads are "clear enough". although a -2 to -5 won't move me up on the board any, a below zero ride is a reward in itself. Apparently, they salted since the road surface is now white lol May be able to get out in the morning after all. Now if I can just get up and out of my warm bed.

I think it was after that @The Dan decided to "ride in" and set the new low temp standard here at -18F, then -23F and in 2019 @fredflintstone rode in at -25F.
I don't know if the numbers are available somewhere but I seem to recall that The Dan recorded a -28 deg. F one year.

It would be interesting to see a list of the winning temperature, i.e. the coldest temperature recoded, for each year that this contest has been going on just to see how much it varies.

If you go to the below page your will see the games from 2017 to current.

Temps here today. No riding though. Likely for the best due to Sunday night's snow.... roads are still snow/ice packed and slippery. I did see a dual purpose out Sunday when we got up to +4. Dumbass was riding side saddle.

Didn't make it out in time to get a below zero reading this morning and at 9 AM it's already up to 2 above, which I've already gotten, so I'll wait until this afternoon to ride when it's warm ... er

But, by the time I got all my gear on and warmed up the bike in the garage for 10 minutes before even opening the door to leave, the temperature went up a couple of degrees.

Put me down for 16, please.
Did 30 miles this morning, and I've got to say my battery- heated gloves were not adequate even at the highest heat setting.

And my butt went numb from the cold despite wearing three layers of pants.

The bike worked great, however.

PS. Ignore the ST-1300's Clock. It's several hours off and I have not bothered to reset it yet. These photos were taken about 8:50 AM.

I'd be surprised if no one from way down south posted high on the list after today. Then again I know there is likely too much snow down south along with the cold to get out and ride... let alone for anyone down there to be motivated to do so.

I heard from my son and his wife yesterday that they had 10 inches of snow in Lafayette, LA. They sent pics with a ruler stuck in showing how deep it was. And this morning they also had a low of +6F !!! Their water pipes were all frozen as well. Hoping they don't have any that burst. No one has shovels and there are no snow plows capable of clearing the streets and driveways.
Maybe if some brave soul down there had a trail or dirt bike and bundled up A LOT they could ride in it.

Put me down for a 27F please.

It should have been a Subaru morning and I took the bike instead. Forget about "black ice". There was frost on the road virtually the entire way. I rolled through one intersection when I saw the area to stop at was covered in frost. There was about a 90 percent chance that my foot would slip away if I'd put it down there.

Okay, I'll admit my IQ is 27.

Chris

When I rode to ZION NP last week, it was 36F in Cedar City, when I left in the morning.

When I rode thru ZION, it was 57F in the lower elevations and 44F in the upper.

No temp pictures.

The Rounders have a FB page now. Here's the chart from Mike Davis.

Mike Davis

100's+ Red Hot Rounder
90's Sweating Rounder
80's Half Baked Rounder
70's - R&R (Rounder Relaxing)
60's -Jr. Rounder (Just Riding)
50's - LOTF Rounder (Looking Over The Fence)
40's - FOTF Rounder (Fringe of the Fringe)
30's - Half Rounder
20's - TQ Rounder (Three Quarts)
0-20 - Rounder
Sub Zero - KHOF Rounder (Kook Hall of Fame)
I managed to achieve the Rounder to Red Hot Rounder level. Never hit the KHOF Rounder status.

Chris

Same chart I remember. I don't have FB so cannot get there from here. As said before... I've been past the full range of that chart at both ends. Though I wouldn't mind staying as a Just Riding (Jr) Rounder or Rounder Relaxing level all the time (wouldn't we all).
