ST1300 Oil Viscosity and brands recommended

But wait! There's more!

About 357 more. Now much would you pay? These are listed as replacements (their quality and your mileage may vary. :D) for the second filter dd showed. Like it the Bosch 3323 is a little longer than the ST1300 factory filter. I fill it with some oil during a change to give the pump a 'head start' Just because it makes me think I'm really 'wrenchin'.

I also tell myself I can put a whole gallon of oil in the bike because of the extra room in the filter and that I don't wait to drain every last drop from the jug. Checking the level the next morning I found it to be at the upper limit line so I don't worry. When draining, I do stop for a sammich to let it drain until it won't. I've always wondered with the inside surface of the oil pan isn't angled like institutional shower drains (no I haven't done time).
Well, he did ask for the OEM reference number. That narrows the 357 down some.

Would Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil SAE 15W-40, work in a st 1300. Does it have the required ratings. I rarely ride below 45 F and change oil and filter every 5K. Would there be any starting issues, due to oil thickness. I currently use the valvoline 10w-40 motorcycle oil.

No Issues. Regular petroleum oil in cars that run 5w30 can somehow still lubricate and let an engine start in -30 degree celcius weather.... You're fine.

Just use the T6 5W40.

I noticed. Not so coincidentally it's the number used to get the 357 additional filter numbers. I was just riffing off his comment I quoted. Maybe that could have made that more obvious with "there are more filters in heaven and earth Duporth than are dreamt of in your philosophy".

Why not 15w-40. I dont need the thinner oil as I never run below 45F. Also, some folks said the 5w-40 can get a "little notchy". Any thoughts on that.
I've used the T6 5w40 for quite a while. I change oil every 5k. It shifts fine.

:) I wonder which 10 oil filters (for want of a number) of the 357 might be rated "best" for the ST1300 application?
I will never know.
My default position has now become: use OEM.

One more Rotella T6 full synthetic and Purolator L14610 filter (in both 1100 and 1300). They're both excellent quality for a very reasonable price.

Bought a Used ST1300 2006 and runs like a champ; Please confirm we are using Rotella T6 (the bottle reads for Diesel Engines)?

While a lot of people use this oil in their ST's and I was thinking of doing the same starting this year. Is there any concern as to the caustic content in this oil as compared to non-diesel oils. Diesel fuel has a higher amount of caustic to offset the higher acidity caused by burning diesel fuel.

I have indeed read that diesel oils do have additives specifically to neutralize acids formed as combustion by products, inherent to diesel fuels and their sulfur content. I read that a while back,on the BITOG (Bob is the oil guy), website.

That is quite a short interval. The maintenance manual says to change oil & filter every 8K miles and this is with conventional oil. With synthetic you should be able to go at least 8K and maybe even 10K.

It makes it easy. I know to change my oil at every 5k mile interval on the odometer. And since a gallon of oil and a filter is only $25, it's not very expensive either. I've been doing it this way for at least 20 years so I'm stuck in my ways.

Yes, In my opinion changing your oil at 5K is a bit overkill. You can easily go 8-10K with synthetic oil. But since an oil change isn't very expensive, some change it early.
