ST1300 Oil Viscosity and brands recommended

Mobil 1 10w-40w with Napa 1356 oil filter. 170, 000 miles on this 1300 and 200, 000 on my 1100. No oil usage.

When I bought my first ST back in 06 and joined this forum, I switched to Rotella 15-40 and put almost 40K on that bike. Few years later sold the bike and bought others. Now I'm back on the ST again and bought another with 40 K on the clock and on the way home I thought I bought myself a good one. This one shifted quietly and easily, I was more then pleased. 2 days later the original owner called me and told me that I didn't need to do an oil change, he just did it using Mobile 1 10w-30. I cant have Mobile 1, its a car oil so I changed back to Rotella. I wasn't a mile from the house and realized that my slick shifting bike turned into my old one. Checked the forum here and found that Mobile 1 is fine. Trip to Walmart got me 5 Qts of 10w40, quick dump of the Rotella and now the ST shifts like butter again. Smooth and quiet and now I'm sold.. Thanks Forum !

Perfectly acceptable. I used a previous version of this oil for the first 30,000 miles I rode my ST1300. Today I use this product in 20w50 in my BMW.

Does the OEM oil filter for the ST1300 have a reference number thanks?

Yes. Great.
thank you dd :)

These work a treat too. They have the same filter media and bypass pressure as Honda motorcycle filters. They are 5/8" longer but fit just fine. Usually they are found cheaper than the M/C ones.

Wow. That’s a great tip dd.
Thank you.
some of the K&N’s are quite short but I change them very often.

But wait! There's more!

About 357 more. Now much would you pay? These are listed as replacements (their quality and your mileage may vary. :D) for the second filter dd showed. Like it the Bosch 3323 is a little longer than the ST1300 factory filter. I fill it with some oil during a change to give the pump a 'head start' Just because it makes me think I'm really 'wrenchin'.

I also tell myself I can put a whole gallon of oil in the bike because of the extra room in the filter and that I don't wait to drain every last drop from the jug. Checking the level the next morning I found it to be at the upper limit line so I don't worry. When draining, I do stop for a sammich to let it drain until it won't. I've always wondered with the inside surface of the oil pan isn't angled like institutional shower drains (no I haven't done time).

Because it doesn't matter in the scheme of things, if a few ml of oil doesn't drain out its not going to make any difference. There's plenty more hiding in crevices throughout the engine that doesn't drain out either, so no sense being anal about the last few drops.
