Article [13] ST1300 - Key Knob Farkle with pics

Re: ST1300 Key Knob Farkle with pics

Just wanted to pipe in and say 'Thanks!'. Made mine yesterday and I reallllllllllllyyy like them. They're stealthy.. yet very functional. It's SO nice not to have to wrestle with keys/keychains getting caught under handles..etc.:

Thanks again!

McMaster-Carr has some nice "control knobs" that can be used.

These are their "comfort grip indicating knobs" (60955K64). They have a black shell that looks/feels nice. About $2.50 each plus shipping

I did this last month, what I did, was go to an old radio TV repair shop in town and asked if he had any knobs I could buy. He opened up a big drawer full of knobs from old TV and radios and said, " help yourself" Found four nice matching ones and was told there free. Just a thought , you might want to check into. Dremal cut a slot, JB weld and an hour latter put them on the bike. I just stuck a key in and marked it with a pen,,, went up about 3/8 " cut it off. BOB

Love the idea. I am going to get chrome guitar knobs and use the JB weld. I need extra keys too.....guess its off to ACE! Thanks for the write up, I will add my own to my growing list of album Farkles.

I used crown royal whiskey caps. They too work well.

Nice one thanks.
And an especially nice job of writing it up with clear photos! Bought the stuff this weekend and will have a go at it next weekend.

When you make your key knobs, if you want your knobs to fit flush, make sure you measure carefully before you cut your keys. The glove box and the pannier locks are just a slight different depth. Been running mine for eight years on my ST, Just finished up a set for my new NT700. Glad to see others doing the farkle also.

Thanks for the writup. It spurred me onto to do mine and I'm very happy with them. I used chair leg ends, black, smooth, sticky rubber. They are pure stealth they blend in so well.
Has anyone lenghtened an ignition key to reach down into the void left by installing risers?
Thanks again for your write-up and super photos!

-great idea, and looks great! -i did mine, and now i'm looking at that honda top box wondering if i can do the same or will the key end up falling out?? -might give it a try. -again thanks for the great idea... of course beating your price was hard... 3x$6 for keys, $5 for epoxy, and $9 for oil for the caps (the oil i can use)... so mine was $32!

Where did you get the chair leg ends from? Model #?

This is an easy mod, I did mine too. I used $0.23 of hot glue (for all three keys) instead of the (more expensive) epoxy though.

I would be worried about the hot glue coming loose in hot weather. Let us know if it works out for you.

Well that sounds like it will work just fine, I did not know there were other heat ranges on the glue sticks.

About 3500 miles so far Mike, I think the hottest day riding was about a hunnert. The "High" hot glue is around 350 degrees or so as I recall, I've never used it and doubt my little gun will go that high, sure don't want to get that on one's fingertips...:D

The project is a bit costly, as you have to eat the entire box of ice cream bars/Popsicles to yield sufficient sticks...
