As far as the black marine speakers in the previous posted pictures, are there any reviews of how they sound after install? And if these speakers have been installed, were boxes used or were they just strapped to the metal bars?

I installed Polk Audio db 401 Marine speakers. See this thread, and look for my posts. I cover pretty much everything you need to get you going. The speakers work and sound great. It's always a good sign when the system is loud enough to make the neighbors to complain.

Well, the real reason i'm asking is cause I've already bought a pair of 'em because they were so cheap.....But now im wondering how they'll do once I take the trouble to hook em up....because they were so cheap.
I'll find out in a few weeks when I take the time to hookem up.

At Crutchfield, bought the Polk 401 Speakers and baffles. The speakers are marine rated. They are 45 watts and should work/last. Picked up a water resistent 100 watt amp on-line [IPOD plug in music source]. Am going to mount the speakers in a coupleof weeks. Am hoping actual boxes will be unnecessary!

Am planning on installing my speakers this weekend. I purchased 4" Polk's with baffles. I can't figure any decent option to mount the speakers, other than drilling two holes through the fairing for the bottom two holes. I am still at a loss as to securing the top two screw holes. I am concerned about vibration. Any thoughts?
My 100 watt amp is going in the dash box. I am concerned about heat, but want to keep it dry. My MP3 player plugs into it.

Some local motorcops have st1300s. They have thier speakers mounted with screws going in from the out side of the speaker grills. I didnt really notice the screws, so i asked if they knew or saw how the speakers were mounted. they had to point out the screws. It didnt looks bad, but it did look like something that would crack over time.

It really doesn't get any easier, cleaner, or better performance than buying the Honda Speaker boxes from David Silver Spares. You secure the speaker boxes into the bike with two jack nuts and two bolts to the factory predrilled locatations for mounting the boxes.

glad i found this thread. i just posted one as am thinking same, ok, similar thing....speakers/mounting boxes but wire w/ a 3.5mm jack and toss a phone/ipod on the pocket, leverage the ac power source in the pocket and use some kind of small amp that adds power between the phone and the speaker output. of course, no idea where to start to figure out how to get behind the grille in the dash!!!

You have to pull the side panels off. That will give you access to the area where the speaker box goes behind the speaker grill on the dash. Lot's of parts to pull off before you can pull off the side panels!

sounds like a winter plan....i have a feeling we are going to get hammered with snow in New England this winter so should have lots o time!!! Thanks

Maybe I got a pair just in time then. Ordered them about 2 mo. ago. If you want them I would suggest you call or email them even if it says they're discontinued. I emailed them before I ordered to get a firm price & they responded promptly, w/ follow up when they were shipped too.
