I've been playing in my head and doing a little research on the Net for a speaker system to put in the ST1300 dash speaker grill space. I figure a small power amp connected to a fuse block and then connect some tiny/mini thin width speakers to the amp, make some sort of dash mounted switch to turn them on and off. Would be cool in a camp-ground to listen to a few tunes, or news/weather radio a bit before the battery died. Battery life is a consideration here for non-riding usage.

So any ideas you geniuses? I can't see why it wouldn't work and the idea seems so simple in theory...?

Good luck finding all weather speakers which fit that space. I'd like to do it as well but I don't think there are many options for a full frequency range speaker that small that is also rated for weather.

All weather would be a nice option, but I don't think it's a total deal-breaker. I could see using some cheap small speakers and replace them if the bike gets flooded. Out here in Kali I can count the days it rained on one hand! LOL. :D Though I would still like to wash the bike three or two times a week. ;)

Even Hi-Fidelity would not be a top consideration. Just clear and legible sound. Like these for example... Would look cool on top of the dash!

Dude - for a guy who has as many farkles as you do, the only thing I can add is . . .

"Don't forget the subwoofer !!"

Fred,

I thought you installed a Starcom? Why aren't you just piping your music through that?

I am Bob, but just to my helmet. I just got to thinkin' (oooppss...) about installing some cheap small speakers in the dash speaker grill area so that when I'm parked at the local car-hop, or camping out, etc., that it would be cool to be able to somehow switch to the dash speakers and listen to music or weather/news and setup the tent, or make coffee. This should be a simple cheap alternative to the expensive Honda OEM setup. I would think easier to mount, wire, and power too. This is more of a brainstorming/mental exercise question... (ooowww...) Could it be done? How would you do it? Budget considerations? Etc.?

You can purchase the speaker mounting boxes with out buying the Honda speaker kit and then purchase decent speakers for them.

The speakers I use are these: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-wSVNmE3bMJS/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=228350&I=107DB400

I believe that you can buy the boxes here:
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk
The part numbers are 08A54-MCS-80001 and 08A54-MCS-80002.

I hope this helps.

It does help! Thanks! Now the price for the speakes and enclosures are around $200 (USD. Shipping from GB not included.). Here is a pic of the speakers. Couldn't something like it be found somehow in the U.S. for cheap? Mount them yourself and attach them to a small stereo power amp (under the seat, rear cowling?) with some sort of dash mounted (or elsewhere) switch and music/radio devices attached to Starcom to amp to speakers while bike is powered off (unswitched)? I shouldn't think this would be tuff except for me of course.

OK OK... I've been trolling the Web looking for solutions and then IT HITS ME! Why not a small (5 inches +) video panel on the top of the bike's dash!? You know under the windshield on the top dash...? Anyway, you could arrange it to fold down and be powered by a fusebox. It would have audio and video inputs for lots of STuff LIKE GPS! OH, OH MY GOD! I'M A GENUS! (I know I mis-spelled genius. That's the joke smart-guy! Geez!) And bring along one of those tiny no-LCD DVD player like I've seen in Target; looks like a kids toy, but plays DVD movies and doesn't have a LCD panel and has AV outputs, etc.! THE POSSIBILITIES ARE LIKE ENDLESS DUDE!  :22yikes: :D

OK, back to the thread at hand; simple cheap-a** in-dash audio speakers... (sigh and exhale... Time on hands is the devil's playground...)

Now that is close! Yep! Good size, nice color, decent price. I can see mounting them using the ST's speaker grill as a mounting space; screw through the grill. I found them here in the U.S. also. Looks like a pretty nifty website for waterproof audio electronics:

Re: MENTAL EXERCISE - ST1300 Dash Speakers

The amp is sure to draw down the battery so check the rating. It will need it's own fused switch.

You're leaving a major component out, Fred - INTERNET ACCESS!

Might also want to add a shore line.... :)

Re: MENTAL EXERCISE - ST1300 Dash Speakers

come to think of it... you could also convert one of your side bags into a small, powered cooler / refrigeration unit........small charcoal BBQ in the other....flip down suds, sounds and meat?

It's like a no-brainer! :clap2:

Re: MENTAL EXERCISE - ST1300 Dash Speakers

This also looks like a winner amp. I'm also thinking why not install in rear cowling area under back seat and mount speakers back on say like Veronica's rack, or someplace. Plug in a 3.5mm jacked audio device and smack the remote power button - ROCK ON!

Motorcycle Tunes Amp

Re: MENTAL EXERCISE - ST1300 Dash Speakers

Here's some full range marine 3.5 inch speakers I found on ebay...

Since it's a "stationary use" getto blaster you are thinking about, instead of hard mounting them, I would look for a way to "plug them in" and "set them up" as in portable. :8):

Re: MENTAL EXERCISE - ST1300 Dash Speakers

A while back, someone found just the speaker boxes for sale for $15 each IIRC. That would sure make for a nice install.

Here are the part numbers for them.

Part number 1: 08A54-MCS-80001
Part number 2: 08A54-MCS-80002

Rewards can be paid in BACON!

I also found a 60 inch plasma, to go along with the rest of the install, on sale at Circuit City!
