Well, no use in procrastinating, this job is due...

safety first... ;)

everything in there is covered with a fine layer of brownish dust...
so there is wear on those belts...

IMG_20250308_155328.jpg

also idler and spanner suffered, you can feel some clearance when wiggling, and that significant, grinding noise when spinning by hand...

IMG_20250308_160040.jpg

precautionary also replacing the pump; don't like having to dig into there again soon...

IMG_20250308_161251.jpg

darn internal bypass broke upon touch, could have failed any moment, good that'd I'd scheduled the job now...

IMG_20250308_161736.jpg

replacing w/pipe O-rings while at it; getting the PAIR plumbing out the way, takes the most effort...

IMG_20250308_172245.jpg

new elbows and braided silicone coolant hoses (surely adds 2kph to the top speed ;))

IMG_20250308_183807.jpg

also the internal bypass now with braided silicone line, should last a while now...

IMG_20250308_183838.jpg

tomorrow I'll throw a new pump, spanner and idler in, and install the new belt...

since decades I forget that the gasket is included with a new pump...

IMG_20250309_103410.jpg

will use it when refurbing the old pump....

whilst I understand the philosophy to install paper gaskets dry, I hate it, massively...

IMG_20250309_105903.jpg

in proximity of a open bearing... great, just great... :cautious:

IMG_20250309_105911.jpg

took me nearly an hour... gasket remover won't do much... fiberglass pen is a great tool though...

IMG_20250309_114831.jpg

IMG_20250309_114838.jpg

all installed...

IMG_20250309_121418.jpg

t/belts are sensitive to all kinds of contamination... also skin oil... hence keep it sterile...

IMG_20250309_121630.jpg

perfectly on the markings... on the first throw

IMG_20250309_122204.jpg IMG_20250309_122228.jpg IMG_20250309_122301.jpg

two rotations by hand, then I released the spanner...

IMG_20250309_123535.jpg

new carb boots, OEM filter...

IMG_20250309_152939.jpg IMG_20250309_161051.jpg

filled coolant, carbs back on, fired instantly, let her idle till fan kicked in... no leaks
The silicone hoses stink up the place for a while though...

Next w/e I'll check valve clearances (and yes, new cover gaskets are going to be used  ), and do a carb sync...

Did that grinding noise go away? What is the spanner part you replaced. Was this the first timing belt replacement on the bike?
Wonderful write up and pictures. Thanks!

Yep, I'm firmly in the 'replace the water pump when you do the timing belt' camp now.
After a failure at 130,000 (catastrophic) and 140,000 (bad leak) that fully moved me over. ;)
Spanner and idler pulley show definite wear...
When spun by hand they run kinda "free" with a significant "chchchchchchch...!"
You can also sense some clearance and notchy balls inside... friction that will definitely cause heat during operation -> even faster decay + additional heat accelerate ageing/wear of the belt...

So to all fellas stating those bearings would never need replacing... nay!

And waiting beyond 100,000 miles also seems as "asking for it"...
