Well Gary (GreenZR) has been giving me a hand with my new-to-me ST. Ok, it's been more like me giving him a hand as he's really went the extra mile on pulling it apart and putting it back together. It'd taken me weeks to do what he's done so far. It's in the middle of a drive train revamp. The list looks something like

Fork Rebuild
Tapered Head Bearings
Wheel Bearings
Plastic bits (courtesy of Gary)
Final drive dampers/insert
Rear Shock (courtesy of Gary)
Brakes
Paint
Grip heaters

The hardest parts have already been done. Now we're just waiting on parts to come in and to come back. The plastic paint will come after the rest of its back together.

What time I've been able to spend on it has been a blast! Last week, when I'd get off work, I'd stop by Gary's every night (where it's at right now) and he'd have made a lot of progress. We'd do what we could while I was there, but he'd be plugging away I was at work too!

If I had a 40amp I'd throw it in since we've got the swing arm off. But, after doing it this time it's not so terrible as to make me fear doing it again.

Look :rimshot1: a garage bay full of ST's :D

Glad to be able to help out! I'm loving it :D
When I get home, I'll be able to add more to the story.

Also, I'm willing to help anyone that wants / needs to do the alt. upgrade. Just arrange for the loaner tool kit to be shipped to me & to the next one that needs it. I'm in the tire change list, so you can look me up there to find where I'm located. Southern Indiana, about 25-30 miles south of Bloomington.

Here goes.....

We started with pulling most of the tupperware off, everything except the rear taillight. Getting ready to install the steering head bearings.

Steering bearings and forks rebuilt and installed, with my spare front wheel so we could move it onto the lift.

On the lift and ready to start.

Having a butterfly air impact really helps make quick work of most bolts that have to be removed. I lock the front wheel in the wheel vice on the front of the lift. Then add the extra bar that will serve as the perfect place for tiedowns to hold it all straight. Some other pictures show the bar, it is 1 1/2 inch black pipe, with PVC cut to fit on each end to keep it from sliding from one side or the other while the bike is tied down to it. The hand operated 2ton chain hoist is what I use to raise the rear of the frame to remove the rear axle and then the rear tire.

This bolt for the brake holder gave me fits, finally got it out. Had to remove the mufflers anyway, but this bolt was a pain.

When pulling the rear wheel, I could tell the bearings were shot, and I think they contributed to the wear on the drive splines. The drive splines on both the final driven flange and the final drive itself show significant wear, but we will clean them and moly paste them up real good.

New cush drive rubbers and the inserts are on the way. Also look at the socket bolts for the damper plate. The driven flange has rubbed some of the bolt heads pretty bad, also new bolts are on the way.

Final drive splines. Sorry about the blur in the picture.

Ready to pull the final drive, and you can see one side of the bar that I hook the tiedowns to.

Final drive and the swing arm removed.

Final drive nuts came off the drive housing easy enough, it did not take to much to break them loose. And the drive shaft is in real good shape, the splines at the motor were not too dry, but will get moly paste when it all goes back together. This is pretty much where we are at untill we get some parts. I want to bleed the clutch line while it will be this easy to get to. I hope you have enjoyed my ramblings. More later as we go back together.

Gary.

Which is why I remove, clean and lube that bugger on any occasion it has to come out.
Saves one quite some fancy language the next time...

ouch... that looks quite neglected...
How does the hub centre look? Got a better picture, cause it appears as if the aluminum around the bearing race has worn off?
How is the condition of the 'dovetails' inside the ring gear? Even on that blurry pic it seems that its in need of replacement...
And I would defenitely replace that drive spline...

It is worn a lot, I'll get better pictures when I can. I did not clean anything up, so it is just as it came apart. We'll clean it up and post better pictures.

Should be. The pieces should be on the way today (partzilla). I ordered them last week, but apparently they had to order them from Honda.

ouch, that sounds disapointing... seems its time to roam Ebay and some brakers for a rim and final drive in good conditions, and the dealers for a drive spline as their all due for replacement...
That's always the bummer when the lubrication is neglected... while its such a low effort, saving many $$$ at the end...

The bonus here is that I have spare parts from the 91 ST1100. Some of them have already been used, or plan on using when it all goes back together. If we need it, the driven flange and the final drive hub from the 91 is real good shape. And they are on the shelf ready to go.

And they are on the shelf ready to go.
Yep, always good to be prepared...
Same here, for years I'd collected ST parts on Ebay or from 'warranty/insurance case returns'... such does pay off later on...
Like when I'd bend the bead of the front rim up in Scotland, while hitting a pool with a hidden pothole in it <ouch!>... upon arriving back home step into your 'storage' and grab a new set of wheels (had been taken off a nearly new ST1100 during conversion to a sidecar...)

These are my pictures of the final drive and related parts, and comments from my post on pulling the motor out of the frame of the 91

I pulled the swing arm and final drive today. For the most part I think everything looks good.

Moly paste is everywhere, so the O-Rings have not been replaced as needed.

Photo346.jpg

All the splines look good.

Photo347.jpg

No play in the final drive from the wheel to drive shaft that I can feel.

Photo348.jpg

Splines inside the cup are good, and inside the drive shaft joint are good. I'm just not sure about the splines on the outside of the drive shaft joint.

I might come visit you later in the year to get some new tires put on! I'm in Lexington, KY. about 3 hours from you

Great write up, I love seeing people keeping our noble Dinosaurs on the road!

Here's another look at those splines.

Chris, here are some pretty good pictures of the final drive and the driven flange that I have. I just took these tonight. Also just noticed that I need to update the date in the camera.

Just curios guys, I had an opportunity to get my hands on used final drive from 1100 with ABS. Except the sensor, I don't see any different.do you think or know if it will fit on my 1100 without ABS? The idea is to just clean it and replace seals and bearings and keep as spare since mine is running out.

I looked at my manual, it only shows the ABS/TCS for the final drive. Based on that I would think that it should fit and work on either one. If you had the ABS model ST then you would have to have the final drive with the sensor mount. But I am learning as I go with my ST.

I've often wondered this myself...
