Old Enough To Remember?

my dad worked on big trucks so i was never bothered by the ones that had air starters
my first car was a '68 volvo i think it had the dimmer switch built in the turn signal stalk, i know my Fiat 124's did

I remember the floor mounted dip switch well....

On one occasion I was driving with my GF to pick up my dad from work in his VW split screen camper van....(1200cc engine....) and wondered why it sometimes crunched the gears on down shifts.... I realised why when I found I had been using said switch instead of the clutch..... oops.....

The heater on that was pretty useless given it was air cooled and the engine was a long way from the vents at the front....

Speaking of the engine.... all 1200cc of it..... not the fastest vehicle VW ever built...
My 66 bug was a 1300. When #3 cyl failed my mechanic threw in a 1200 he had sitting around. I was amazed how much slower the 1200 was. Sold it and got a 70 bug 1500? Much nicer and gas heater!

In '86 I was logging onto Bulletin Boards with my Atari 800 & (if my memory serves me correctly) a 1200 (!) baud modem. One BBS I frequented was in Chicago which I accessed toll free from Canada.
One day, the owner set up a conference call with a bunch of users from all over North America & we chatted for several hours. About a week later, I got a phone call from someone claiming to be from AT&T demanding to know who set the call up: I told her to pound sand.
As it turned out, the guy who ran the BBS was a major phone phreak who was making free long distance calls all over the world.

Not sure if he was caught but the BBS disappeared a few months later.

We had one of these when I was a kid. I remember laying down on the rear deck & looking up at the stars when we were on the highway at night.
Those were big tanks - my parents had the same 'version' but it was a Pontiac.
IIRC, they had to have reflective 'taper' on the bumper corners because they were so wide.

To prank my parents, I saw a '74 or '75 Lincoln Continental Mk IV on a used car lot... I had a FIAT spider at the time & the car salesman thought he had a live one. He let me take it out for a test drive & I drove it home to show my parents my new "purchase". This beast had the 460 in it and I remember watching the gas gauge drop as I drove it the 1/2 mile home!
Needless to say, my parents were appropriately unimpressed with my clear lack of judgement: I learned a few more cuss words that day. This behemoth of a car occupied almost our entire driveway.
I had a bugger of a time keeping a straight face. :p
