Itchy Boots

ST Owners forum member Jim C-G got a new drone (he flew it in his most recent video). I don't recall what type it is - but it sure seems to work nicely and he didn't mention any special licensing requirements (he is flying in Newfoundland Canada).

If you want to see it - go to his YouTube channel: Old Guy on a Bike and watch the video that he posted around a week or two ago. I sure hope he posts again soon...<hint hint> as he always brightens my day.

Hey Pete!
I was hoping the Mavic Mini would be the one, but without any "follow-me" it became a no go. The Mavic Air and Air 2 are really good camera drones but the Canadian prices were just too steep. I want it to enhance my videos, not become my sole hobby lol. I narrowed it down to an $800 (including taxes Cdn.) budget and was looking at the Zino 2, Fimi X8 and the Parrot Anafi. All of them have good reviews and quite comparable to the Mavic Air but 2/3's the price. Anyway, I went with the Parrot Anafi. Really pleased with it and yes, there will be more videos soon.
I've never been a "brand" shopper. Nothing wrong with DJI or say GoPro, but there is always something just about as good (sometimes even better) that has a different name on it.
That being said, if I was doing long adventure travel I would think of the brand names for support maybe and because you can find service and parts inn the most obscure places.
I do have to get my pilots permit (have started going over the material) and I do have to register the drone as it is above 250 grams. Any video I may have posted so far is from the future when I have done both.

That is indeed comforting to know Jim - I will inform Transport Canadà and the RNC that you are (errr, um, you were, or perhaps eventually, you will be...), fully compliant.

While we are on the subject of government directives - here is a notice from Health Canada which requires your attention this evening:

Today she went to my hometown of Dordrecht. It was nice to see, as well as Kinderdijk. I used to bicycle to that location many a time.
Enjoy the episode.

:rofl1:. Just .
You've made my day Pete, probably not the first time, probably won't be the last.
Just .
Upt'North.

Great to see Nora is still making videos while she waits to, hopefully, get back
Peru and continue her journey northward.

Well done! :rofl1:

My Mavic Mini is arriving on Monday. I'll let you know how I like it. I mostly acquired it because of the 249gm issue
I'm looking forward to your observations. And pics of and from the Mini! I'm seriously considering the Air 2 for the follow me / RTB stuff. And obstacle avoidance is a plus. :D

I'm still a beginner, I mentioned before I have a beginner drone called a Yuneec Breeze. It has a follow me mode, but a little sketchy. I get about 8 minutes out of each battery. I have registered that drone because it weighs above the 250gm mark, which means I also need a license to fly it. I really don't want to have to deal with that so that is why I went the Mavic mini route. Both drones do not have the avoidance sensors I think I can live with that. The mini has other features that I like, like the Cine mode and Quick shots.
It also notifies you if you are in a no fly zone and actually will not fly unless you get an unlock code. I'm OK with that as well. I went with the plus package which includes 3 batteries, prop guards, case and extra props. Each battery lasts for about 25-30 minutes. It's smaller in size and will pack nicely in a tank bag. I can charge the batteries when I'm riding by connecting the charger to a USB port.
For a follow me mode I suppose I can let it hover at a height of 60-100' in the air and ride through the shot. I can then change the "land to home point" and bring the drone to the new location. That's just a theory and I shall see if I can make that work.
Yes I will post my observations, I will start a new thread for that.
Cheers

Yes that's why I mentioned the Russian chip that eliminates restrictions for no fly zones – for those who like to color outside the lines. Fun for the whole family. Russkies tech in US drones. What could possibly go wrong.
