Is the classic sport-touring motorcycle doomed to extinction?

It was also that experience that taught me that I don't agree that most any motorcycle can be turned in to a tourer by adding a windshield and luggage of some kind, which is what I had done to the Shadow. Some can, but I have my doubts about the success that will be derived with most. Regardless of what you add you still have the inherent limitations of the motorcycle itself, like the suspension, or a gas tank that is to small, or the engine performance. Adding a windshield is not the same as having a full fairing by any means when crappy weather hits.
Absolutely agree. The NH750 is a good base to build on, in my opinion.

And relatively cheap. Money is and always has been a factor for me.

We each evaluate a motorcycle by our own criteria, needs, and wants- Choice is a wonderful thing.

A rather candid observation, but not overstated at all.
We have remarked about all of these issues here on this very forum, particularly as it concerns our aging out, and the lack of younger enthusiasts entering the sport, compared to our generation and the next, and the one after that.
Granted, the oldest bike I've seen around here is the odd Norton, but not a lot of machines from pre-1960s.
I just don't want to live in a world without motos. So thankfully, I won't have to.
I'm just lucky that way.
 
and they are still not bringing the NT 1100 into the US according to that list. Disappointing! And the 2025 gets a host of great new features and improvements

Still doesn't draw me away from my trusty ST1100, not a bit...

In fact not even my GF can be interested into anything else as her '07 NT700VA, that rig has totally grown to her...

Another thing not mentioned: founds...

travels require an appropriate vehicle and appropriate founds...
Two folks on two bikes for 3 weeks to Scotland and back equals about € 5200,-... not included are the follow up service costs like new tires, brake pads, oil change filters, replenishing worn riding gear, etc...
Compare that to the costs of a budget charter flight and one or two weeks at an "all inclusive" resort...

I think we need to wait for the return of the sport-touring motorcycle.

Right now, there's a huge adventure bike trend. Sure, they offer versatility, but they're a compromise in that they do everything OK, but only one thing great. Manufacturers like to push products that target the latest trends and that's what we're seeing.

When the adventure bike trend slows down (and I think it will) we'll see manufacturers target other segments. Since trends go in cycles (no pun intended), the next big thing just might be sport-touring motorcycles.

... well, probably because the new 1300 GS adventure is so ugly.. they gotta make up sales... lol
 
Reviewers know to not say what they really feel if it is negative about a product because otherwise the magazine will lose advertising revenue, and they'll soon be looking for a job.

I wasn't talking about magazine reviews, but other motorcyclist board posts ... suggest you look at some BMW or Ducati owner boards (as always opinions vary). A fairly common opinion expressed seems to be: "I didn't like it when I saw the pictures. When I saw it in person, I liked it a lot." Some examples:
