Installation of Gear shift indicator: 6th gear no more!

stebel horn, front fork brace, gear shift indicator--hmmm which one first?

Let me see if I can help. I have an aluminum SUPERBRACE with the FORK SEAL COVERS. Has a small "nick" on the brace (outside surface, not machined surfaces that mate to fork legs). $75 paypal shipped to MS

GPX-H01 is the correct kit. The install was so easy I'm not sure what could be wrong. I would check over the connections again. With the speed-sensor plug disconnected and ign on, spinning the rear wheel by hand should not register any speedometer movement. I WILL MAKE AN ASSUMPTION THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE A SPEEDO-HEALER NSTALLED? Separate the speed-sensor plug and look at the connections, bent? Perhaps a little dielectric grease or spray on the connectors would help, they have been mated together for 5 years, five seasons of salt and snow in Il. Assured that the speedo-sensor plugs are mated, the only other connection is the YELLOW-green wire either at the ECM or Tach.

Then proceed to installation #7: Checking that everything is installed properly. Did this help? If not, please elaborate on the problem or display.

Not sure what the ign pulse gen is or where located but why should YOU be the only one required to do this. If your connections are solid I would think a faulty harness (H01) would be a possibility. BTW, I never use the wire splicers, I always strip and solder the connections especially with those very thin wires.

Yep, GPX-H01 harness and the display is working like a charm other than not going into Learn mode. I have the harness connect correct as the display is getting power (6...1 countdown etc.) and the speedo is registering wheel speed when in gear...

I love diagnosing electrical problems, they teach one the true meaning of humility.

The display counts down and does the slow L flash... it does not do the faster L flash unless I unplug the instrument panel connector, then it does the faster L flash. However with the instrument panel connector disconnected, no tach, no speedo, and darkness reigns on the instrument panel.

Thanks for your assistance so far.

From the above post I could not tell if you STARTED the engine to verify the "L" blinking faster. If "yes" check the "Tap" wire.

If this does not work and the startup sequence is counting DOWN, I'm lost. I did check wiring diagrams for '03 standard and deluxe models onward, all use the YELLOW-green wire to tach. I will give it some more thought.

If still nothing, have a new display and harness sent out. I just does not make sense.

Yes, started the engine, the faster blink only occurs with the instrument panel disconnected.

Also yes to the yellow/green wire, confirmed this when I disconnected and spliced it; with the wire out of circuit the tach registers zero, with it connected I see the RPMs...

Trust me I am confused too.

You have a point there. This gizmo hooks into a lead from the ECU to read the gear position. The question is: if this information is already known to the ECU why the heck didn't Uncle Soichiro just spring for another display and show it to the rider? It can't be a cost consideration with the ST's price.

Pete

It seems only the '08 and '09 ECU provides a direct read-out of gear position (and maybe not even those years). The digi gear indicator for earlier models works by comparing rpm to road speed. Since there's no indication Honda changed the tranny on the '08 and '09, I suspect the ECU in those models may be doing the same calculation. If anyone has the gear indicator on an '08 or '09, it would be easy to check.

I just put one of these on my '04. It works great, but it only displays the gear when the bike is in gear and in motion. It doesn't work when you pull the clutch in, or when you're stopped. (So it won't tell you you're about to try to pull away from that stop sign in 4th gear.)

If the '08 and '09 truly have a direct readout of what gear the transmission is in, the display should work with the clutch in, and when you're stopped. Anyone put one of these readouts on their '08 or '09?

I have an '08 and I sent them some questions I had about the product. I am thinking of getting it so I will let everyone know what I find out about it.

I sure don't understand all this hub-bub about not finding 6th gear and having to have an indicator to tell you you didn't find it. Sheesh, I find 6th gear ALL the time! :headbang:

..okay, so I don't really find it, but I'm not telling my foot that. It thinks it's working hard when shifting! :hat1:

healtech website indicates as GPDS-H02 for gear indicator only for 2008/09 st1300 .

any pics to see on where it was installed at speedometer panel?

I ordered mine yesterday and will get it sometime next week. I will get some picks on several locations where it could be mounted. I am not sure where it will ultimately wind up at this point.

Here's mine. Not a very good picture, but it's a small crop from a larger image. I can try to get a better one later.

If you're going to dissamble the instrument pod to mount it there, there's one mistake in the shop manual. The manual shows, IIRC, 9 screws that hold the 2 halves together. In addition, there are two small screws on the back, behind the headlight adjuster, that need to come out, too.

Oh wow! I didn't realize that was behind the plastic lens. Very nice install. How involved was it getting it to that point?

VERY NICE INSTALL.

If you're comfortable removing other body work, getting the instruments out and apart isn't too difficult.

It's explained well in the manual, except for the two little screws I mentioned above. And there is one thing to be careful of: On the back of the instrument panel, right in the center, there is a plastic peg, about 3/8" in diameter, that fits into a rubber grommet on the metal structure to position the panel. This peg is hollow. Do not put side loads on it or you'll snap it off. (Mine was already broken when I took it apart.)

If you do snap it off, it's easy enough to repair. Cut a nail to just the right length to fit in the hollow area, fill the hollow and coat the mating surfaces with epoxy, stick the nail in, and put it back together.

EDIT: Oh, there's one more thing. There's no gap between the instrument cluster and the cover with the clear plastic lens, and therefore no place to run the wire. I ended up drilling a hole. Just to the right of the LCD panel, there's an angled section of plastic that's completely hidden by the dash when it's all put back together. I drilled a 3/8" hole, cut the corners out with a small utility knife to make a square hole just big enough to pass the connector through. Then I sealed the hole with duct tape and RTV. Once it's all back together, it's completely invisible.
