In the Aug 2010 issue of Field and Stream, there is a comparison of boots, and after reading the reviews in the magazine plus many more on line, I decided to plunk down some money on the Irish Setter Shadow Trek. Irish Setter is a trademark owned by Red Wing Shoes, among others.

I went to Bass Pro Shop and was told they had them on sale for $69 on clearance and nobody could tell me if or when they would restock.

A long search later I eventually wound up at a Red Wing store. Now I haven't even heard of them since I was a kid, when they sold kid shoes and little else that I remember.

In any case I had to special order as not one single shoe of the Irish Setter brand was in the store. Later I find that the closest store to have anything was hundreds of miles away.

Anyone have experience with these, and what is your opinion?

Never had any Irish Setter boots but have had several pairs of Red Wing work boots back in the day. Always very comfy and good quality. They are made not far from my home town where I grew up. Never a problem getting them there. It is a beautiful area to go ride and get some though. :D

I have pair of the Irish Setter Ultralt Trackers, snake boots, great for hunting . There UltraDry with ScentBan with 1000gram thinsulate. Their a little warm for snake boots for summer use but late fall/winter/early spring just right: Very comfortable well built ..

I've worn Red Wing leather boots for 20+years,,,, very comfortable and supportive for all day hunting in any kind of weather. Very well made, never have had a problem with them. I get mine from an Amish owned shoe store about 15 miles away,,, on a very twisty road!:D

I use the Danner Pronghorns with Goretex and 400 grams of Thinsulate. They are the most comfortable boots I've owned and have held up great for three years now.

It seems that this model of boot is in very short supply and the closest store with any in stock is hundreds of miles away.

However, the guy in the store ordered two different pair to try on. They came in about 5 days. He ordered a 10 1/2 D and an 11 D. I usually wear a 10 1/2. However, both pair were too tight just behind the toes, so he is working on getting me an 11 EE. None were available at the factory, apparently, but 3 stores show some on their store inventory software.

Updates as they happen.

I did get the 11 EE size, and they fit very well. If you are interested in any of these, pay particular attention to the fit just behind the toe area, around the ball of the foot. My normal size would have been 10 1/2 D.

My buddy (best man) used to wear them. I must have it confused. I was under the impression Irish Setter was a specific model in the Red Wing line. His were full length (10 or 11") and kind of redish. They must have been built well because they lasted him 8 or 10 years of daily wear. However, they were $200+ Let us know how they work out for you.

I don't have that model but have a pair of Irish Setter Logger's that I've owned for over 20 years, all leather. I just treat them with Mink Oil every year and they're still GREAT! Can't hardly kill the Vibram soles. I mainly wear them when 4-wheeling and when hunting or in the rough.

Can't speak to the Irish Setter boots but for the Redwing's I stood 12-18 hours a day as a RN First assist in them (CVOR) and would not have traded them for anything. The last 5 years I have abused them in the refinery in the worst environments I can imagine. Resole them every 2 years and coat them with groundhog fat every year (Eastern Kentucky GoreTex)!
