Hi everyone back looking for more info , this time on the hjc modular helmets. Any thoughts and experience with the hjc modular helmets.
There are a few different ones to choose from cl max 3 , -rpha-90 and the is max 2.
Thanks
Lynn

My first modular was an HJC CL-MAX. I liked the helmet, but its weakest link was the visor ratchet mechanisms. The thin plastic components on the right side broke on two occasions, making it impossible to raise the visor without it popping off the hinge. A real pain when on the road (and when off). As I recall, I paid in excess of $20 to get the first replacement part and decided I wasn't going to spend another dollar on fixing it again. It's OK to use if one is careful not to lift the visor.

I take it the cl-max was the model before the max 2 and max 3?

I had a CL-Max and then upgraded to a Sy-Max II because I wanted the built-in sunshades. Both are great helmets: comfortable, durable, and convenient. My only complaint is that they both have a LOT of wind noise. If I forget to put in earplugs, it's really noticeable, even on short rides.

I just picked up my 2nd SY-Max III. This 1st was in yellow and much to my dismay this color has been dropped. The new version
has a much better latch system + the d-rings have been improved as well.

I have been using the RPHA the past few (3-4) years, I like the helmet, find it fairly quiet as I usually wear ear plugs but on occasion forget to put them in and don't really notice much difference, the sun shade is a nice addition in the helmet from previous helmets, I have not had any issues with the mechanism but a friend did and they gave him a replacement.

Thanks guys I notice you's all ride the same bike style , would this have anything to do with the noise?
Did you's find the HJC size fitting on the small size?
Does the added weight of the Modular type helmet add to the fatigue on the neck? I've always worn a half helmet and don't have any injury's but the added weight is something to think about.

I went with the Max 2, after Scorpion stopped making replacement shields for my helmet and quit making a helmet with the same shape. I even called Scorpion and they confirmed they didn’t make a replacement for the EXO-900.

The HJC is a smaller shell than the Scorpion and much lighter, which makes a big difference on a long ride. The drop down sun shade works great and the visor is set up for a pin lock insert. I haven’t been bothered by wind noise, but affects riders differently. I wanted a hi-viz, but settled for a red that’s a perfect match for my bike.

Reported noise has nothing to do with the type of bike. Unlike a full face, even when closed a modular has openings along the lower sides to cause wind noise and allow to intrude into the helmet. No chin bar is as integrated as the single shell of a full face.

Thanks Dave for clearing that up, I was going to ask if they were different from the solid FF helmets but didn't think it would an appropriate question seeing as the topic was directed toward the HJC modular.

The SyMax III is an excellent helmet for the price.
I wear it or my Nolan depending on the day.

I'm on my second Sy-Max III, its hi viz yellow is fading but it's been a good helmet overall.

If you're looking for ratings on modular helmet check out this site. Modular helmets have issues with staying closed on impact and the Sy-Max ranks pretty low at 40%, I won't be purchasing another one.

The IS Max 2 is a relatively affordable helmet that has pretty good scores on impact tests and it stayed closed / latched 100% of the time.

I have a IS max 2. I did order a size up from my normal size. Best helmet Ive owned so far, for noise, rain protection, and function ability. No problems with any mechanisms. I started modular with a heavier helmet so I am going down in weight. However I have never noticed or found helmet weight to be a problem. I do some long rides in the 24 hour range so I am in the helmet a lot when I ride. I would by another.

Yup - same view here as expressed above by UP. I do like the ability to raise the chin bar when fuelling or talking to a toll booth person etc. and while there is a bit more wind noise than on my HJC CL17 full-face,itisnt objectionable.

I don’t find the weight an issue at all, but I have never ridden with a half helmet so I cannot really compare.

I also use a Scala Rider Q3 Bluetooth sounds system in both of my HJC helmets and it integrates well with both.

I've been very happy with the original CL-Max helmets over the years. I'll probably go with the Sy-Max the next time.

I believe the Sy-Max line is discontinued in the U.S.. If you want an HJC modular with a drop-down sun shield, you're looking at the IS-Max or RPHA 90 / RPHA Max.

I've worn the RPHA for several years. I like it, but the ratchet mechanism will wear down in a while. The ventilation button on top no longer works. With good-fitting ear plugs, the noise is not objectionable. I did go down once while wearing one and trashed it, but the chin bar stayed closed. On hot days, it's nice to raise the face shield, but lower the sun shield.
