Cruise control for ST1100

The other thing to watch out for is if you are using LEDs in the brakelights, if so you will need to wire in a relay to trigger the brake light circuit for the servo unit

It appears to me, that the ST1100s switches, 'engage (complete the circuit)' when you pull in the levers.
But I could be wrong.

Just took a look at the wiring diagram and Uncle Phil is correct. Circuit is completed when the switch or lever is engaged.

Pat - If you look at the left hand side, you can usually 'squeeze' (with a little persuasion) the vacuum booster inside the vertical stay.
I looked on left side too. Would have to sacrifice the pocket on either side due to size of the servo (no vac).

I don't think there is room between dash and headlight, and no space anywhere else on right side, except fairing pocket.

Might see if I can relocate the remote preload adjuster for rear shock, which resides in the tail. No simple solution wherever I put it!

The servo on the Rostra measures 5" long, 4"wide and 2 3/4"deep it's a fair sized unit. The Audiovox being a cylinder has a few more options to hide and a longer cable.
I do recall reading where a member installed the Rostra servo on the right side in front of the fairing pocket. I looked at that and there wasn't enough real estate on my bike for it. The new MCCruise is the size of a caulking cartridge but can only fit in the tail section as well.

No, you can install the new MCCruise up at the front as I was the first person in the world (according to them) in install one on a ST1100.
It takes a little 'fiddling' and a bracket, but it works just fine that way on a ST1100 ABSII.
On non-ABSII bikes, it would be even easier.

Since my bike is not ABS, I'll look closer at the left front. Cable route/length might make that difficult.

I put the Audiovos CCS unit down low, left lower fairing, near the alternator. Ran the cable under the engine, up right side and across by cross member. Rostra won't fit there.

It's amazing how much STuff lives under the Tupperware, and how Ma Honda has filled most every nook and cranny!

Pretty sure I pioneered that install. Looks like enough room for a Rostra.

That’s the first place I tried, too big and the cable just barely made it to the carbs. I didn’t try hanging it upside down...that might have worked but the wiring would’ve been more exposed to the elements. Still it being a rectangular box the fairing would not fit over top.
Thanks for your pioneering the install for the audiovox, it was a nice farkles on two of my STs

Also, the Rostra states to not install it pointing down.

Looks like the right pocket area is where mine will end up. Going to pull the upper fairing to work on the fit.

Pat - I'm just thinking the left side might be easier since you are closer to the carb pulley and the right side has that pesky vacuum cleaner hose that runs to the air cleaner. If you like I'll measure the ABS components that live on the left side (which you don't have) and see how big they are. Can the Rostra 'live' on it's side? I'm thinking where I've got circled on the picture on it's side -

Phil, Rostra works ok on its side. Either side will likely require sacrificing the fairing pocket. Right side makes for a straightforward connection to the carbs, will have to check cable route and length on left side.

Air hose can easily be swapped from right to left. IIRC the 91s had 2 scoops/hoses and though I haven't inspected left fairing, I think bosses to mount the scoop are molded in.

The saga continues...

Pat - When I had to install the electro servo for the new McCruise, I made a bracket that bolted to the top motor mount on the left side and 'rested' on the horn mount. It sort of 'lives' just under the fairing pocket with the end stuck back into the upper fairing. If the cable is long enough, it might fit assuming you rest the 'end' of it all the way back to the pocket where the trim piece meets the upper fairing and lower cowling. If the cable is short, could you get a 'cable' extender made? Good luck on whatever you decide to do! I'm with you - the early models had scoops on both sides and the 'nose' mounted to two embedded nuts in the upper fairing. Never though about swapping sides with it!
