Are BMW's Overrated ?

When my wife was alive, we looked at the Z3/Z4, but it was too short for tall ppl. I'm only 5'10", but my wife was almost 6'. The S2000 actually had more head room. I also like the looks of the Z3/Z4, they only come in rear wheel drive :(

Sounds like you've done more research than I have. All I've done is look at the styling of the Z3/4, and I know I like what I see. I haven't sat in one, just looked at a few from time to time whenever I can. I like most of the 2 seat roadsters on the market, but it was the bike or one of those.

I chose the bike.

Actually tried to buy an '07 RT last Saturday. Missed by about 20 minutes as the fellow sitting at the desk inside the dealer was puttin money down while I was outside licking it. Almost enough to make a grown man cry...

Just read an article on how the RT's head lamp assembly's are starting to fall apart and BMW has it classified as normal wear and tear. A $650 part. Now mother Honda has ignored the $30 thermostat issue. Both ignore perceived defect's so one which is better?

Still don't know what I'll end up with. I like the BMW's but they are at the high side of my budget and the additional maintenance costs make me quiver. So a shiny ST or Concourse could still easily strike my fancy.

I learned tonight a friend's out-of-warranty '06 or '07 R12RT lost it's ABS controller. It's a $2000 repair but he "got lucky" that BMW covered it out of warranty. I don't think Honda would do that but I don't think Honda would have a $2000 ABS repair at 37,000 miles either.

I absolutely love my airhead BMW though. I wonder how many 28 year old ST1300's will run and look as good in 2033?

Horst, yeah I agree with you, racing the I Drive is great, but for driving up here in Denver, AWD XI is the snizzel! 350K kms? 210K miles?

4 wheel or all wheel drive is also very helpful up here in the Mitten. Our driveway has a nice uphill grade to it, so it's almost a must for us. Of course if I did get a Z3/4, it wouldn't ever see a winter day, even a nice one.

Maybe when I retire....

We got 2 foot of snow in two days this last week! Now it's a balmy 50 degrees outside! Snow is melting fast, Think I'll take the Bimmer out for a drive! Hope you get ur wish TigerRider!

I'm going to get my beemer out today for a short ride, just to top the tank off for storage. It's only going to be in the upper 40's today, so I really don't plan on going long distance. The weather is taking a cold turn later this week, and I don't expect it to recover enough to tempt me to get it back out this year.

And I also hope to add a Bimmer to my Beemer someday. That would be a dream come true. Maybe when I retire.

WOW, that would be nice, a brand new Z4 (get the M model if you can afford it) and a slightly used R1150RT,,,,SCHWEET! It took me about 6 months looking for my car, its a 335xi, 2 dr, Monacoblue, Tan interior, 6spd Manual, Sports Package, Winter package. They don't make a lot of manual transmissions any more, I've heard that BMW won't make any more unless you order it from the factory. Since I bought it I added the Dinan Stage 2 ECU remap, Dinan Exhaust, Dinan stage 2 Suspension, and Dinan foot pedals. All n All about another $8K, but it was sssoooo worth it  Good Luck!

I don't think BMWs are over rated at all.

I used to think they were overpriced, but I think that's not the case having owned an ST1300 for 6 years.

I bought my ST, new, for $12,000.
I've added heated grips, a cargo rack, custom saddle, GPS, accessory plugs, intercom, better lighting... and so on.

I don't think my ST1300 is the same cost as a BMW yet, but it's getting pretty close. If I had bought a K1300 out the door with all of those features, it doesn't seem so expensive by comparison any more. :shrug2:

When the K1200GT was introduced as a 2005 model it's price with all options was close to $21,000 US. It still would need some of the things you mentioned as they aren't offered as options.

Boy, talk about sweeet! Sounds like you have a very nice car already. Maybe I can find the money in a few years, but right now my best chance is to win the lottery. With college expenses coming up in a few years for my daughter, then 3 years later for my son, extra money for a sports car isn't going to be very high on my list of needs. Wants? Yes. Needs? No.

And if I win the lottery, it will probably be an 'M' model, top of the line. Might as well dream big, right?

I think BMW bikes are overrated given all the reliability issues. The latest, which I saw in this month's Rider magazine, is headlight reflector assemblies cracking on one model. Totally unacceptable in my book.

I also think BMWs tend to be horribly over-complicated, with a lot of engineering dollars spent on answers to problems nobody reported. Why does a bike need power brakes, as just one example?

IIRC, the K1300GT is pushing 22,000 base. Could be the weak dollar, but my cage and my motorcycle combined aren't worth that much.

I think all the bikes are overpriced at MSRP. Except the blowout prices that Honda had on the leftover '06's and the current blowout prices at Buell. That's why I ALWAYS buy my bikes used. You can find any bike you want used with very low mileage at very reasonable prices. I guess that's why I'm a che... I mean frugal ST owner.

Up here,BMW's are sold at full pop. One dealer, forget discounts. I've never seen a leftover on the floor. When I bought the ST (an 04 in may of 05) it was discounted $4000. The RT was $23000. The ST was $14000. No contest! It's going to be a few years before I'll need to replace the ST,who knows what will be available by then? Cheers Marty

I can't believe it took until the 44th reply for someone to say they were overpriced, which they are, but yes I will probably still buy the R1200RT SE when I can afford it......

Of course relatively speaking, with Honda's latest price rises in Europe, they are now expensive too..... the GL1800 Wing is now over ?21,000....... eeek!

I also think they are overpriced, but I figure sometimes you get what you pay for. BMW's are very nice bikes, but I couldn't afford a new one, not at around 20 grand or more. I can't put that kind of money into a bike. So I bought a nice used 04' RT with very low mileage and a few farkles. This was my best option, as the bike just fit me better than an ST or any of the other bikes out there. And comfort and long range was at the top of my list.

All in all, I think I did pretty well. My bike is just about brand new for half the price of new. And the payment won't break my budget, either.

TigerRider, just got back from the BMW dealer for oil change (FREE for 4 years!) I saw the coolest Z4, Bright RED, HARDTOP! it folds into the trunk, man it was SSSWWWEEEEET! Blk leather inter, 6spd manual, I thought about trading in my Dinan3,,,,,,,I have to stay out of that place!!! The price $56K,,,not too bad. It looks like they made the seating bigger, roomier, :hyp1:

Great, now I have to drive clear out to Colorado...LOL! Boy, that is exactly what I've been looking for....the $56K, that is! It sounds nice. I wish I could have seen it, but I've liked every one I've looked at, so this Z4 wouldn't be any different. I'm afraid to even go look at the new ones. I can't afford that kind of debt right now. Like I said, maybe a nice used model soon.

But I can see how you might be tempted to make a deal. From what you've told me about your car though, you should keep what ya got.

Yeah, I'm keeping mine,,, but man that thing was nice! The new ones are slightly different, they look wider and a little longer. I think it was a 2010, but I'm not sure.
