RTC 2025/08/31-09/7 Rolling ONcamp&cabinSToc Northern ONT

I've created GPX and Google map files for the first three days. They are in the first post.
You will need to bring food for the first two days as Monday is a holiday and most grocery stores will be closed that day.

Day one is South Baymouth to Providence Bay. (You will need to route from your location to Tobermory for the afternoon ferry)
Day two is Providence Bay to Missisaugi Provincial Park
Day three is from Missisaugi Provincial Park to Rabbit Blanket Lake Provincial park. Pick up supplies in Wawa
Day four is from Rabbit Blanket lake Provincial park to Chutes Provincial park, pick up supplies in Blind River
Day five is easy to plot...start in Massey Ontario take 17 to the Sudbury Bypass head south on 69/400 Pick up supplies in Parry Sound 256 kms. I can turn this into a longer day by heading further East on 17 towards Verner then taking hwy 64 to Noelville then joining hwy 400

What’s it gonna cost?
The provincial campgrounds come in at about $50/night. Up to three shelters per site plus a vehicle fee ($25x7=$175)
Approximate distance is 1600kms. Fuel at $1.50/l. For me it will be $150 for fuel
Ferry $60 with seniors discount
Meals @$60/ day x7= $420
If you camp for the whole week including ONSToc this adventure is just a touch over $800
This is excellent value compared to three nights motel at ONSToc

If you decide to motel it at ONSToc 3x$145 plus HST will just be under $500 plus $180 in meals plus fuel $175 for just under $900
Next week we’ll talk about the bare minimum camping gear you need, and affordable ways of acquiring gear if you don’t have any.

Really good break down Rob.

The only thing I'd say is that some attendees share a hotel room, so make it $250 not $500 for that line item, for those that share.

So on a daily basis, by your numbers...

Onstoc $300/day (900/3), or if room-sharing $216/day (650/3)

Campstoc $114/day (800/7)

I wonder about fuel costs though. They may not be quite so close for 3 days riding vs 7.

Regardless it's an interesting and useful practice. Thanks.

Now if we go to the extent of tent sharing as per two people per shelter and max out at three shelters per site that brings the nightly cost down to $7.50 per person. ;)
Now I was assuming that if it’s one person per tent like single occupancy in a hotel room, let’s face it, that’s the more desirable for many of us old farts….and speaking of which, if you share a room…you share the farts….fight for the bathroom…time the showers….. fight for the bed closest to the bathroom…..and the other guy used all the towels…..like I’m not the greatest guy to share a room with, Just sayin’

I’m guilty of presenting facts leaning favourably to an outcome I WANT!

There’s also the potential of three people sharing a room which brings the accommodation costs down considerably.

But the chance to sleep in the great outdoors..pee where ever you feel like it. Enjoy caveman TV…..sleep on pad with a stone or twig poking through….like what’s not to like!

There are 3 kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics. Mark Twain

No matter Kiltman. Never mind me. Your post is a good one. Camping is a lot cheaper. I never thought of how much cheaper before. Your "statistics" did that.

I'll likely tag along for the 1st couple days before needing to circle around and get home.

Cheers.

Not so sure that you can pee wherever, I might not bail you out but at least I will visit. Not sure that I am that tempted to share a hammock. ;)

Every once in awhile it’s good to use the search function on this website.

For those of you who wish an alternative to camping here are some links. I suggest you google for B&B’s and motels as There can be other options available.
Providence Bay
Elliot Lake
Wawa

I have also put this in post #1

Those taking the Chi-Cheemaun should make a reservation, I remember coming back from the west and was going to go with the Chi-Cheemau to Tobermory but wasn’t able to get on last minute. The other thing I remember from the one time we took her the provided tie downs weren’t ideal.

What's the least amount of Gear I need to do the camping portion of the ride?
A shelter, it can be as simple as a tarp, however, a three man tent would be ideal. This gives you room to store your gear inside the tent at night and be able to move around. It doesn't have to be high end. Canadian Tire or Walmart usually have an economical version between $100-$150. Borrowing one is always an option, or buying second hand.
If it's used, you can easily waterproof the fly by using a Nitwax product.
A sleep system. This is where acquiring a good sleeping pad will pay off. There are numerous brands available and some are insulated R2-R4. To enhance warmth you can lay an emergency blanket over top of the pad, the reflective side to your body. They are available for a few dollars off of Amazon. You can also cut a piece of Tyvec (Building wrap) the footprint of the pad and lay it face down under the pad, preventing moisture coming up.
Consider a sleeping quilt or Duvet instead of a sleeping mummy bag. When you lie in the bag your weight on the bottom side compresses the insulation to the point of not insulating you.
These items can easily fit into a 30-40L dry bag that you can strap to your seat. There will be room for other things as well.
Meals
Breakfast will probably be done at the campsite as we will not be close to a village that has a restaurant. Lunch stops will be near a place where a burger or subway sandwich can be acquired. There will be a grocery store stop just prior to stopping at a campground to pick up supplies for making dinner at camp.
cutlery you can buy at a dollar store, along with a plate and a bowl and cup.
At some point we can post what gear each person is bringing so we could share a stove, a coffee pot, an axe or grill.

I welcome more tips and hacks, so we can all benefit.

Agreed.
Anne n I were thinking of crossing to Manitoulin Island at the end of August last year. The ferry was sold out on alot of sailings. We were camping BPNP that week.
