"New" Rotella T6 5W-40 clutch slips

RobsTV,
Let us know if the spring swap cured the problem, will ya?

I've had a lot of bikes in the the garage, both play bikes and race bikes that developed clutch slippage with miles. I've always first changed the clutch springs to a heavier sping to solve the problem. It works until the clutch plates wear out, and somtimes is good until the bike leaves the garage forever.
Just had to do that on my Kaw Nomad last summer, no problems now.
Good luck with it.

On another note: Anyone ever see T6 in a quart jug???

I'd hate to be on a long ride and need to "top off" and have to buy a whole friggin gallon!

Ride straight,
JIM

Yes, actually I had a hard time finding the gallon jugs here - was only finding the quarts... finally started seeing them.

I've learned that when I see T6 on the shelf at Wally-World to buy a jug or two because that section of the shelf is usually empty!
Maybe they will start carrying quarts, that would be nice as some of my bikes only need a quart or so.

Thanks

Advance Auto Parts also has the gallon jugs. Not sure about the quarts.

Parts for clutch spring replacement and on the way, but won't be here until late Wednesday, or about 8 days after ordering them. Hate ordering parts across the country. Will know how they work by this weekend.

After testing new EBC clutch springs for a couple weeks, results are not good.
Yes, they helped a little, but clutch still slips (though not as bad) when riding along at around 55 in 5th, drop it to 3rd and nail it.

Have to burp the gas for clutch to fully grab and tach to drop.

Again, the mobil1 racing 4t seemed a little worse than the Rotella.
This has me wondering about the MA and MA2 ratings.
If MA is all we need, then why come out with MA2?
Perhaps MA is not good enough with some brands?
Or, perhaps latest versions spec'ed at MA are different, and not as good, so to comply they now also have MA2?

You replaced the springs but not the clutch pack, right? I would have been inclined to do the opposite, replace the clutch pack and not the springs. Keep us posted.

Yes, just the 18 year old springs, not the 55,000 miles of use clutch pack. I would think the clutch discs should last close to 100,000 or more, especially after looking at comments from others in these and other forums?

I've got the exact problem. Started a few weeks ago and have not had a chance to really look at it close yet. Bike has almost 48K on it and noticed the slipping a few thousand miles after a T6 oil change. Up to that point I had been a Mobile 1 user.

Will be watching your thread closely. Might as well just order all the parts I need now and replace everything.

Cheers,
Pete

I see this was moved from oil to ST1300 Tech section. Took me a while to find it again.

Due to the bike actually being an ST1100, and the issue probably more related to aging ST1100's, perhaps ST1100 Tech might be a better section to move it to if the oil section is not appropriate?

I still think there are some changes being made to today's oil, and these are contributing to issue. MA2 is there for a reason, due to oil content changing, which addresses clutch slippage in today's oil, and this might be an example of what to expect.

Hope this isn't a repeat - but oh well, it's worth it IMHO. $5 REBATE FOR ROTELLA T6 GOOD TIL END OF MAY - TWO PER CUSTOMER. THEREFOR, I GOT 2 GALLONS FOR UNDER $17 EACH - MINUS A STAMP.

check the label on back?
I have seen a new one..("resource conserving")... I'm assuming this crap is about the same as energy conserving!?
haven't had slipping, but switching gears sometimes have seemed sticky....and when I went to M1 MC oil...or amsoil
it seems to change gears more smoother....
I'm a diehard AMSOIL user and I haven't found anything thing better. Has anyone used both brands in there ST? If so is there any difference in performance of the oil besides price?

Just did a change last week with valvoline 10w40 full synthetic motorcycle oil. Got everything from walmart 4 qts and even the oem oil filter. total cost $48.

yay, another dead oil thread is resurrected.
I noticed that a lot of comments about Dead oil threads and outside of the fact that I was taught that if you ain't got something good or constructive to say, don't say anything. Some Riders don't know, BUT WANT TO KNOW. REALIZE THAT AN OLDER news paper is NEW if you've never read it. STOP Hating
